Description Wanderer 2011-04-29 12:31:43 CEST
Description of problem:
When a fixed display resolution is selected (i.e. 1280x768), the actual resolution used is not what is selected (it's actually 1920x1440). Tests were performed under VMWare ESXi4 with the SVGA II adapter.

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to "Control Center \ Hardware \ Browse and configure hardware".
2. Select the video driver ("SVGA II adapter" in my tests).
3. Press "run config tool".
4. Select "Flat panel 1280x768" as monitor.
5. Select "1280x768 24bpp" as resolution.
6. Either press Test or restart the PC

The resolution when testing or in case of rebooting, before loging-in but also after the login was set to 1920x1440 instead of 1280x768.
Comment 1 Wanderer 2011-04-29 12:32:59 CEST
The tests were performed in a b1 installation fully updated (to b2 i assume since it was released a few days ago) running under vmware esxi 4.1.

@ Wanderer

Thanks for the attachments, and sorry to reply so late.
Is the problem still there in current cauldron?

Reporter, could you please reply to the previous question? Or tell us whether the problem is still in Mga1? If you won't reply within two weeks from now, we will have to close this bug. Thank you.

Hi.

I updated my Mga1 installation. The problem is still there. I don't know how to test cauldron, sorry. Is there an alpha or beta ISO image i could perhaps install?

Let me be more specific about the problem though.

- Pressing "Test" sets the resolution to 1920x1440 instead of 1280x768.
- After rebooting, the resolution in the login screen is 1920x1440 instead of 1280x768.
- After logging-in, the resolution is correctly set to 1280x768 though.

Hope it helps.

@ Wanderer,

The Mageia 2 alpha 1 image is planned to be released the day after tomorrow, if you want to test again and report here, that would be very nice.

Thierry, despite not knowing whether this problem is fixed in current cauldron (it isn't in updated Mga 1), assigning to you. The reporter gave all requested information already 5 months ago. Leaving the version to "Cauldron" because of the expected feedback on Mga 2 alpha 1

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

Hello.

I just installed Mageia2 using the Wired Network-based Installation CD (non-free).

The default resolution when i booted was 800x600. During installation configuration, i had set the monitor to plug-n-play and the display resolution to automatic.

After the installation, i performed exactly the same steps and configuration options i describe to my first post (Steps to Reproduce) and when i pressed "Test", i got the "Is this the correct setting" message in a gray screen but the resolution did not seem to change at all. I saved the settings and rebooted the PC but nothing changed.

Reminder: I'm still installing and running Mageia under VMWare esxi 4.1.

I just updated my Mageia2 installation to the latest version. Here's what i've noticed:

1. The bug i describe in my first post still exists (1280x768 resolution). What happens is that the 1280x768 is actually shown as 800x600, in both the test mode and in actual mode (if i restart the PC).
2. If i change the resolution of the monitor and the video-card to 1280x1024, the whole process works fine (in both test and actual modes)!

Still under ESXi 4.1 (not fully updated though).

Version: Cauldron => 2

(Note that the wording in English might be slightly different.)

The default video configuration on boot can be changed in mcc::booting::configure_booting_system

Go to the second page, select a boot line, and press the "modify" button,
and then the "advanced" button.
The top line allows you to set/verify the mode graphique on boot.
(It shows width x height x bits/pixel.)

mcc is available in
 console -or-
 menu::tools::system_tools/configure_your_computer

From your last post, once you set the video mode on boot, your problem is solved.
