Description Rolf Pedersen 2013-06-09 06:39:59 CEST
Using konqueror in KDE 4.10.2, gwenview displays pictures and videos, if so configured. When I tried to view an mp4 file, sound did not play and gwenview reported it needed an "mpeg-4 aac decoder plugin"

After some hours of installing various plf packages, as I reasoned this was due to the exclusion of faac from Mageia https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1730
at the end I installed
gstreamer1.0-faad-1.0.5-3.mga3.tainted.x86_64
gstreamer0.10-faad-0.10.23-11.mga3.tainted.x86
and gwenview now plays, at least, the one mp4 I first tried, which didn't work.

I don't know, exactly, what was needed but it seems to me that this functionality should be installed, when gwenview is installed, by default.

If the problem with playback is fixed with the help of 'tainted' or 'non-free' package then I doubt it would be fixed. Gwenview is in core repository and there could not be any dependency on tainted or non-free packages...

Understandable. Maybe some hint could be provided to the user, some dialog with an explanation and easy switch to click to install the needed program(s). (There was an offer to search for the needed plugin included with the error message but it did not resolve the issue, for me. There was no further information displayed when I clicked it). I see lots of similar reports. After all, without this functionality, gwenview appears to be broken, to many, if not most.

Comment 3 Oleg Bosis 2013-06-09 21:04:02 CEST
One of the possible solutions could be providing a meta-package (called say task-codecs) with codecs dependencies for both core and tainted repos and then adding this meta package as a KDE dependency (and probably GNOME too). If the user has only core repo enabled then he/she would have only free codecs and if the user enables tainted repo then tainted codecs get installed with this meta-package update.

Mageia 3 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status 4 months ago.
http://blog.mageia.org/en/2014/11/26/lets-say-goodbye-to-mageia-3/

Mageia 3 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.
