Description of problem: This bug s also filed in Mandriva (Bug 44629) since 2008!!!! When I get to the keyboard choice - it defaults to "US Keyboard" I clock on the "More" choice, and a new window pops up to choose another keyboard layout. I choose "German" - click "OK" - then I get dropped back to the original Keyboard selection screen which still shows "US Keyboard" as chosen. There is no visual feedback that I chose the "German" keyboard although it was chosen - and then I have to click "Next" to continue. This could be confusing to newbies. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Everytime a fresh install is made Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

Thank you for reporting. Almost the same happened to me when I choose English as my only language, instead of Dutch or multiple languages. After that it seemed that installer didn't accept my choice for a Dutch keyboard. That even confused me, and I have used Mandr* since Mandrake 8.0, so I don't think of myself as a newbie Unfortunately, I don't recall whether that was on i586 or on X86_64, nor whether it was Mageia 1 official or Mageia rc 1 I tried to install. Do you happen to know if the problem still exists in Mageia 1 official? If so, a seperate bugreport for that release should be made. Do you happen to have the /root/drakx/report.bug.gz of the Cauldron install that went wrong (and, if applicable, of the Mageia 1 release install as well)? If so could you please attach the file(s) to this and/or that bug report(s)?

You don't need to bother about those files anymore, there is a much simpler solution: When choosing your language, first choose the language (English, I suppose) that you prefer to use, but don't go on yet, first click the bottom-left button, the one for installing multiple languages, and choose German. I just did that with English (UK) in the first screen and Dutch (Nederlands) and some more languages in the second screen. I'll try to attach a picture of how my "pick your keyboard" screen looked like, after I did this. There were even more keyboards available in this screen than you can see in the picture, you can't see some UK and US ones. So with proper instructions in a HOW_TO_INSTALL_MAGEIA no one needs to ever run into this problem again

This one is for the language choice screen: http://waesvanm.home.xs4all.nl/webhelp/content/ar01s02.html and this one for the keyboard choice screen: http://waesvanm.home.xs4all.nl/webhelp/content/ar01s06.html They don't solve this bug, but they'll help prevent confusion.
Hi, This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment. Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2. Thanks :) Cheers, marja

Here is a new link for the relevant help screen: http://doc.mageia.org/content/selectKeyboard.html
That is helpful - Thanks! But the bug is not resolved.
Severity: normal => enhancement
Note to reactivate the subject: the bug is still there. Still a _minor_ annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless. Same with similar bug 3579.

Manuel Sorry about the duplication. I did look; and normally Bugzilla is very good at proposing similar-looking existing bugs. BTAIM - This problem since April 2011?! - Comment 10 is too mild; it is nothing to do with newbies. The fact remains that you cannot know at that stage that your preferred k/b choice is for real, since the pre-chosen one is all that is indicated. - Comment 9 (May 2012) holds true.
Still valid in Mageia 4 pre-release ISOs. Chose German locale, the used the advanced window to chose French keyboard layout, but after validating it still showed that the choice was set on "Deutschland".

I'm thinking about moving the advanced options back into the main window, using the new popovers gtk+ widget
Thierry, do you think you could craft a fix for Mageia 5?
(In reply to Thierry Vignaud from comment #19) > I'm thinking about moving the advanced options back into the main window, > using the new popovers gtk+ widget Does that mean that the user would no longer first see a screen with a selection of keyboards, based on his chosen language(s) If not, then stop reading. However, if so, then I propose to first try something else for the keyboard choice: to change "Please choose your keyboard layout" in this screen http://docteam.mageia.nl/en/installer/content/selectKeyboard.html into: "The selected keyboard below is the default one for your language. Please click on 'Help' if you have a different one." The help page explains that after choosing a keyboard from the "More" list, it won't be shown after returning to the initial list, but that it'll still be the chosen one. I don't care about switching to the full list for countries, the majority of users know which country they're in even without getting a preselection ;-)

My suggestion doesn't take into account that some users can select a different keyboard at the beginning of install, and then see this screen again in the Summary step.

I've patches to use GtkPopover but there's still usability issues
