Totem cannot play videos.
I decided to remove and reinstall it when I saw duplication of similar lib. Totem works fine with own libtotem...blah...blah but I had to remove package "libtotem-plparser-mini17" to play videos. I'm afraid two "parser" package was installed and hits one the other.

I had had an occasion with Openbox which could not start. After removing and reinstalling it could run. It's imaginable that the situation was similar.

I remember that Totem was reinstalled and libtotem-plparser-mini17 package has been removed and the problem is gone.

Now I'm trying 64 bit live DVD with KDE and I think I didn't see this problem. But Totem still can't play midi right now. See my other bug post (id=9964).

I'm checking the thing. In fact I have small sample files (mpg, avi, wmv, mkv, flv, 3gp etc.), to check Totem.
