It would be interesting that the installer installs the java plugin by default, because it will be hard to find for users afterwards (especially since it's not java-xxxxx-plugin anymore but icedtea-web).

To achieve that, how about adding it as a Suggests to firefox and other web browsers ?

java-1.6.0-openjdk is on the ISO's. But not icedtea-web.
