Description Antoine Pitrou 2013-03-12 11:30:11 CET
When trying to run Mageia-3-beta3-LiveDVD-GNOME-x86_64-DVD.iso on a KVM-based x86-64 virtual machine, the best I can get at is the following screenshot. After that, nothing happens.

I can also get the same behaviour with: Mageia-3-beta3-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD.iso

After some time, CPU goes to 100% in the guest, ctrl-alt-F2, etc, allows me to login via the console. I have collected some logs and details as to what is going on. (attached.

The most intersting details I've found is in the Xorg log:

tried pressing F6, and choosing safe mode, when booting the live CD.. Same behaviour.

Changing the KVM video card from cirrus to qlx, vmvga, vga will resolve the problem.

If this is difficult to fix.. maybe displaying a message saying to change the video card that KVM presents might be the way to go?

setting the kvm video card to "xen" also does not work. (hardly surprizing)

Also, as additional info. The installer: Mageia-3-beta3-x86_64-DVD.iso works OK with KVM video card set to cirrus.

To add to this,

I can get the exact same error, by:
Installing from DVD, using minimal with no X

Booting from install DVD, choosing upgrade
adding a graphical display.

Boot system.
X won't start, it claims: kernel module claiming it

Sorry, but this bug saw no action since over 2 yrs ago.
No cauldron package has stayed the same since then.

Closing as OLD

Please reopen if this report is still valid for _current_ cauldron and/or fully
updated Mageia 4
