Description of problem:
Some GNOME Shell extensions like System-monitor have a clickable "Preferences..." that is supposed to launch gnome-shell-extension-prefs, but nothing appears.

Note that there are 2 workarounds:
- manually launch gnome-shell-extension-prefs and select the according extensionâ¯;
- start Tweak Tool, go to the extension section and click on the configuration icon on the left of the slider that (de-)activate the given extension.

But that's not very user friendly...

I was pretty hard to find where the log is: ~/.cache/gdm/session.log
So, here is the error reported by the system-monitor  shell extension:
