Description Norm Proffitt 2013-01-27 22:54:24 CET
I'm trying to get the wireless controller working in Mageia 2 on a Toshiba Satellite S855-S5380 laptop but the system does not even see the controller. lspci does see it and reports:

08:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8723
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 0723

How can I get wireless networking working?

Thanks.

I know everyone's busy and I hate to push but I'm wondering when I can expect to hear some feedback regarding this bug.

so it was indeed your card, sorry.

after a little search it's seems a 'global linux issue'. but it seems you can have some solution

After looking at many of the links in the Google search I'm left wondering. Are you telling me that I need to try to build and install the driver myself? Based on the various links that seems some what challenging for many depending on which kernel they're running. Also, what will happen the next time Mageia releases a kernel update? Will I lose my wireless connectivity until I manage to port that driver to the new kernel?

I would think that the correct solution is for Mageia to add the driver to the appropriate package so it's users wouldn't have to go through all the challenges related to trying to support their own drivers. Is that the plan for this device? If so, some idea on when the update would be available would be greatly appreciated.
Comment 6 Samuel Verschelde 2013-09-06 21:41:11 CEST
Of course we will make it work in Mageia. However, we might have to wait for a newer kernel and will maybe not be able to backport the driver to the current Mageia 2 kernel.

Assigning to kernel maintainer in case he has a solution.

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
