I've successfully upgraded my toshiba 32 bit machine that i use as a daily driver so it has several modifications from a fresh install. I decided to make a 32 bit dvd (4 gig free software version) usb and chose to upgrade by booting from it. 

I'm very impressed and glad it worked like a charm, i let it do it's thing on my desk while i was at work so it took at least an hour idk i remember seeing the time say it was going to take 4 hrs but i don't believe it was that long.

Tested my playonlinux GREAT
Tested my Libre Office GREAT
Tested my Firefox GREAT
Tested my VirtualBox GREAT Machines run perfectly with no changes
Tested basically all other programs i use THX Let me know if i can be of more help
