Description Otto Sá 2012-11-04 15:03:13 CET
MATE is a fork of Gnome 2.

It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop to Linux users using traditional metaphors.
MATE is a desktop environment forked from the now-unmaintained code base of GNOME 2. The name derives from yerba mate, a species of holly native to subtropical South America used to prepare a beverage called mate. The renaming is necessary to avoid conflicts with GNOME 3 components.
Several GNOME applications have been forked and renamed:
Caja - File manager (from Nautilus)
Pluma - Text editor (from Gedit)
Eye of MATE - Image viewer (from Eye of GNOME)
Atril - Document Viewer (from Evince)
Engrampa - Compression tool (from File Roller)
MATE Terminal - Terminal emulator (from GNOME Terminal)
Marco - Window manager (from Metacity)
The developers plan to port MATE to GTK+ 3,[5] though another plan to stay with GTK+ 2 has also been expressed. The project is supported by Linux Mint developers:
We consider MATE yet another desktop, just like KDE, Gnome 3, Xfce etc⦠and based on the popularity of Gnome 2 in previous releases of Linux Mint, we are dedicated to support it and to help it improve.
New features have been added to Caja such as undo/redo[8] and diff viewing for file replacements[9].
MATE V1.2 was released 16 April 2012. It is one of the default desktop environments shipped with version 12, "Lisa", of Linux Mint. Packages are also available for Arch Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Salix OS and Sabayon Linux. MATE is also the primary desktop in Linux Mint Debian Edition, with Cinnamon as a secondary alternative desktop. MATE was proposed for inclusion with the Fedora 18 release later this year.
It is no secret that many people do not like GNOME 3. Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel, has joined that list of people who dislike GNOME 3.
Which distributions is MATE packaged for?
Arch Linux (MATE is available to users via this page)
Linux Mint (MATE is available to users via the Linux Mint repositories)
Debian / Ubuntu (MATE is currently available to users via the tridex repository)
They are all community versions like Mageia. Many Mageia user are asking for Mate because the they hate gnome shell.
