Distribution=Mageia release 2 (Official) for x86_64
CPU=Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz

The present sound troubleshooting states:
"The classic bug sound tester is to run the following commands:

- "lspcidrake -v | fgrep -i AUDIO" will tell you which driver your card uses by default
- "grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf" will tell you what driver it currently uses
- "/sbin/lsmod" will enable you to check if its module (driver) is loaded or not
- "/sbin/chkconfig --list sound" and "/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa" will tell you if sound and alsa services are configured to be run on initlevel 3
- "aumix -q" will tell you if the sound volume is muted or not
- "/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp" will tell which program uses the sound card."

This list is incomplete:

1) it should begin by
"- check if your sound output device is correctly plugged in"

2) it is not so clear how to "check if its module (driver) is loaded or not". I suggest to write:
"'/sbin/lsmod', which lists Linux loaded modules, will enable you to check if the module (driver) used by your card is loaded or not"

3) aumix is not installed by default in Mageia 2, so the troubleshooting should say something as
"Install the package aumix if it is not yet installed (See <a href="https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installing_and_removing_software" title="Mageia wiki">Installing and removing software</a>)"

4) There should be an hyperlink to a more comprehensive page. If, for instance "grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf" produces no result, then what to do? Etc.

Ah, I forgot one thing in 1):
"- check if your sound output device is correctly plugged in and turned on"

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.
