Summary:
incorrect default timezone for the desktop clock =>
desktop clock timezone clutter (In reply to comment #0) > Description of problem: > The pop-up of the desktop clock shows UTC time in addition to local time. This > is likely clutter/puzzling for the overwhelming majority of users. > I'm not sure all DE's have this, but tbh, I think those users who are puzzled will be glad with the feature once they get used to it. The world is getting "smaller and smaller", more and more people have colleagues or business contacts in other parts of the world. Social media help us keep in touch with friends and relatives who moved to far away countries. Using UTC times is the least complicated way to make appointments with those in a different time zone. With that in mind having an easy way to see the UTC time is great and something that will be needed more and more in the years to come. CC:

This certainly sounds good but I think this the wrong solution for such issues. When such appointments are needed, the respective geographical zones play an important role. If the time zones are not very distant and outside Europe/Africa, using a non-intuitive (=far-away) reference point to avoid small-if-not-zero time differences is awkward. If the two time zones are distant, then at least one of the them is far from UTC: UTC is then impractical since one needs anyhow to calculate what's convenient for the remote contact. To put it another way: It is not the job of the user to use a technical time reference to make a simple appointment. There is far more value in the clock being able to use several time zones corresponding to cities (already implemented in KDE), or in other applications for widgets/helpers taking into account the timezone of the person on the other side. Well, all Mageia teams plan their meetings in UTC times http://www.mageia.org/en/calendar/ and I really like this feature. Before, I used to set one clock to UTC time and another one to local time, but that caused me to miss appointments because I didn't always look at the right clock. However, I'll cc the maintainer, in case he can and wants to change this behaviour for Mageia. CC:
