Description of problem:

I couldn't find an existing bug report for this.

Until a couple of days ago I had my desktop computer set to automatically log in to the Xfce desktop, but then I found it wouldn't load the desktop fully. It loaded the top panel (which overlapped with the Home icon on the desktop itself) and a couple of items on the bottom panel and then stopped with the two bubbles still rotating. I changed to LXDE and then tried again this morning having selected Xfce from the login screen, as problems like this are sometimes temporary, but it's still happening.

I found the first time that I could open apps such as LibreOffice, work on them and then close them down from their own menus, but the maximise, minimise and close buttons on the actual windows weren't displayed. Also the windows were overlapping the left-hand side of the top panel (where I have most of my shortcuts and my workspace switcher) and couldn't be moved, so I couldn't use the top panel items.

I also needed to check my e-mails, so I opened Thunderbird but then found I couldn't close it from its own menus, as the File menu closed before I had moved the mouse down to the Exit option. This morning when I tried again, Thunderbird was still open and won't go away.
