Description Michel Briet 2012-08-14 01:15:12 CEST
Description of problem:

At end of graphical boot, just before starting KDE, screen gets corrupted and
system gets frozen and does not react to any key hit.

1) If I switch to text interface at beginning of boot by pressing ESC, no freeze occurs.

2) If I hit Alt-SysRq-e during freeze, boot switches to KDE start. Everything seems OK except ethernet which is disconnected (but this may be a side effect of Alt-SysRq).

During freeze, /var/log/syslog log file is flooded with error messages like this :

localhost kernel: [ 52.803636] [drm] nouveau 0000:02:00.0: PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR - Ch 2/0 Mthd 0x0200 Data 0x00000001

No errors were found in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
3.5.1-desktop586-1.mga3
x11-server-xorg 1.12.3-2.mga3
x11-driver-video-nouveau 1.0.1-3.mga3
libdrm_nouveau2 2.4.38-1.mga3

How reproducible: always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot in graphical interface
2. Wait for freeze (just after 5th bubble over cauldron ...)
3.

With my PC, sometime (2 per 10) Cauldron freezes on start of graphical boot.
If I use nouveau driver or nvidia it is the same.

nouveau worked just fine on Mageia 2 on my sister's desktop system, but on Mageia 3, it freezes. It usually doesn't take using the GUI very long for it to freeze. The screen will just suddenly corrupt in a mixed up repeating pattern (looking like it was created out of what was on the screen when it froze). I have to use the power button to turn it off. Unfortunately, there are no helpful error messages in any logs from when this occurs, it locks hard.

The affected system is a Dell Inspiron desktop with an AMD CPU.

DMI: Dell Inc. Inspiron 531s/0RY206, BIOS 1.0.3 06/15/2007
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 7950: NVIDIA Corporation|C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] [DISPLAY_VGA] (rev: a2)

Mageia 3 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status 4 months ago.
