Description of problem:

Kernel 3.3.6, while it works fine, has been end-of-lifed. We ought to move to 3.4.4 (or later) to have an updated kernel.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Mageia 2
2. uname -a
3. Note that 3.3 is EOL (see kernel.org)

How much was the standard 3.36 kernel modded for mageia? Is there any reason why 3.4.4 can't just be slotted in?

the kernel 3.3.8 in is testing, for the rest I don't know, thomas ?

Just because its EOL upstream does not mean it's EOL in distributions.

there will be a 3.3.8 with security and other fixes released soonish...


As for going to 3.4 series, we usually dont upgrade kernel, as even if it
comes with new features, it also comes with new issues...

And current 3.4.4 still have some issues that 3.3 series dont have,
so it would introduce unwanted regressions ...

But... we might be swithing to 3.4 series a little bit later as it seems to be turned into a longterm kernel upstream (no final confirmation yet...)

Closing this report. Per our updates policy, new versions of software (kernel included), are not updated to newer releases unless there are strong reasons to do so (for example, security fixes which can't easily be applied to the version shipped with the release).

Status: NEW => RESOLVED

Would now be a bad time to mention that 3.6.1 is out?

But this still begs my original question: what's the difference between the stock kernel and the Mageia one? OK, later versions have bug fixes applied but is there a specific reason I can't just drop 3.6.1 in (for example and after building it).

and ~every 6-10 weeks there is a new one... we know... :)

(as with any software, there is always newer stuff available)

But we will stay with 3.4 series for Mageia 2 as it will be maintained upstream as a -longterm for 2 years...

Feel free to build your own, note that if you use 3rdparty drivers (amd/nvidia/...) you will probably need to update / patch them too...
