Description Wolfgang Bornath 2012-07-11 12:30:53 CEST
Description of problem:

System: Mageia 2 (KDE) on 64-Bit system with Nvidia proprietary driver, current updates

Browsing with Firefox(same happened with chromium-browser), no other applications open. All of a sudden the GUI freezes, does not take any input. gkrellm does not show any thermal problem nor any unusual CPU or memory activity.

Logging in from my notebook via ssh works. I changed to root in that ssh connection and gave 'shutdown -r now' which was answered by the system as usual (System is shutting down for reboot".

After that the ssh connection was broken (sshd shut down on the target) but the frozen GUI was still there - I waited for 10 minutes, nothing changed.
Then I tried the SysRq keys, only SysRq+Alt+R worked, rebooting the machine.

After reboot I checked syslog and found:
----------------------------------------
Jul 5 13:27:42 marvin-1 kernel: [10565.322087] NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.
Jul 5 13:27:42 marvin-1 kernel: [10565.322098] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!
Jul 5 13:27:42 marvin-1 kernel: [10565.322102] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!

Jul 5 13:27:42 marvin-1 kernel: [10565.322140] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!
----------------------------------------

Is this possibly related to systemd?

How reproducible:
Not reproducable, does not happen regularly. It also happened before when using a different application, so I do not think it is related to any user application.

Over the last 2 weeks this misbehavior has increased. It happened every 2 or 3 days in non-regular situations. Sometimes even a couple of minutes after a new start. No matter whether I am using the KDE or the Gnome system.

To exclude a hardware issue I spent a whole week with Siduction, running it 24/7, no freeze.

As it is now my Mageia 2 productive system is not really usable because the problem may occur at any time and all work at that moment is lost.

This is an upstream nvidia bug, see:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/debian-ubuntu-rhel-fedora-linux-nvidia-nvrm-gpu-fallen-off-bus/

Looks like it has been fixed in more recent drivers.

Assigning to nvidia packager so that he can tell if there's something that can be done in Mageia 2.

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
