I did a minimal update to the gdal package:

This update adds gdal-python as dependancy to gdal itself,
because otherwise many of the python tools contained in gdal won't work.

It also removes the VERSION and NEWS files from the devel package, because
they are already contained in the gdal package itself

There were not other changes in this update so it should not break anything

Tested on Mageia 2 i586.

The package in core/release doesn't have gdal-python as a dependancy, and as expected the gdal*.py scripts don't work. The VERSION and NEWS files are indeed present in the devel package.

Once updated, gdal-python is shipped with gdal, and thus the gdal*.py scripts work. Still, the VERSION and NEWS files are still present in the devel package as far as I can tell:

Testing complete on Mageia 2 x86_64, same procedure and results as comment 1.

Waiting for Oliver's input to validate the update or not.

It doesn't really hurt to have those files in both packages. And I have a bug report against gdal here, so I will most likely push another update soon.
So you can validate this as is.
