Description François Jaouen 2012-05-20 11:59:53 CEST
Description of problem:
When booting from a GNOME liveCD, there are too many questions asked before the desktop comes up.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Mageia2 RC

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from a GNOME Live CD
2. question 1 (after about 1,30 min) / Choose a language
3. question 2 / Do you accept the licence
4. question 3 / What is your Time Zone (note preselection is OK, Paris in my case. Is it because I choosed french at question 1 ?)
5. question 4 / Choose between local time or UTC (I don't want to be rude, but who cares about that when testing a liveCD in order to decide to switch on Mageia ? btw, UTC is the wrongest default choice)
6 question 5 / Choose your keyboard type

By comparison and without any offense (my only goal is to made Mageai better), when booting Kubuntu live CD, a popup screen appears to choose the language. It appears very early, along with the boot menu. Once a language is chosen, it sets the language for the boot menu itself, the keyboard, the timezone, etc. There is no more question afterward.

setting to installer since it use the same code iirc, but yes this is now a little old :)

Summary: LiveCD : too many questions ask before boot => LiveCD/installer : too many questions ask before boot/install (language, timezone keyboard, etc)

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

We can't fix installer bugs in stable release.

This bug has been detected while testing Mga2 RC and is still present in the final version. So it should be adressed (or not) in the next release.

Valid still remarks, though I personally see no need to consider fixing them (and in my opinion UTC *is* the best default choice for this planet).

:-)

Indeed, I don't see that "fixing" this bug is going to lead to more happy users. There'll only be different ones who'll feel frustrated.

However, local communities can build localized isos which need less questions.

Anyway, reassigning to the iso-builders.

Question 1 (language) is essential (I think everyone will agree!)

Question 2 is presumably Mageia policy. Personally I'm not convinced it's worthwhile - how many people actually read the licence before clicking OK? But it's not something the ISO builders group can decide to remove.

Question 3 is needed for the clock to be set correctly. OK, for someone just taking a look at Mageia this isn't a necessity, but we would likely get just as many complaints if the question wasn't asked, and the clock showed the wrong time. The Live system does at least try to pick a sensible default based on the answer to question 1.

Question 4 is again needed for the clock to be set correctly. I think there was a misunderstanding by François here - the question is whether the hardware clock reports local time or UTC time, not whether the Live system clock reports local time or UTC time. Maybe the question could be better worded?

Question 5 is quite important for those who don't use the standard keyboard for their language, so again we'd likely get as many complaints if we removed it as if we leave it. Again, the Live system does at least try to pick a sensible default based on the answer to question 1.

Finally, I agree with Marja - whatever we do, we won't please everyone. So I vote to set this to "won't fix".

No responses to my last comment, so setting to won't fix.
