Description Simple 2012-05-04 05:58:32 CEST
When installing Mageia 2 beta3 using a USB device reaches a point where the install stops and prompts the user with:

I can´t access a Mageia Installation disc in your CDROM drive.
Retry?

If i choose no it then shows a list of drives to gain MEDIA access, but this is strange since this is a USB device, so why does it need a cdrom drive for?

Never saw this happening in Mageia 1, which i also installe using a USB device.
Comment 1 Dave Hodgins 2012-05-04 08:38:08 CEST
Is that a usb cdrom, or a usb stick?

The rc iso images are in qa testing, and I haven't seen that
with a usb stick.

If it's an actual cdrom, this bug is probably a duplicate of
bug 5518.

i dont remember saying it was a cdrom, why you put in question what i wrote?
Comment 3 Simple 2012-05-04 15:15:08 CEST
Its also not possible to but the Mageia 2 beta3 Live CD KDE, it outputs:

drakut Warning: Unable to process initqueue
Comment 4 Dave Hodgins 2012-05-05 01:13:21 CEST
I was asking if the usb device was a usb stick, or a usb cd/dvd player,
since there is a known bug with cd/dvd players in beta 3, that's been
fixed for the rc release.

If it's a usb stick, then it needs to be investigated. Can you install
the usbutils package and attach the output of lsusb?
Comment 5 Simple 2012-05-05 04:55:19 CEST
Its pen disk (USB "stick"), but i dont see the RC available in mirrors to test.
Cant add the lsusb output, i have uninstalled mageia.
Comment 6 Simple 2012-05-06 07:27:17 CEST
I have now tested dvd RC and this problem continue existing, and when i hit ALT+F3 i can see in logs:

mounting /dev/sda on /tmp/media as type iso9660
mount failed: Invalid argument

so this clear is a problem that comes from drakx-installger-stage2 code, and in Mageia 1 this didnt happened (the install with a USB pen disk went fine), so some change that is triggering this.

Already runned a dif between drakx-installer-stage2-13.58 and drakx-installer-stage2-14.19 and i can see there many changes but im no expert in this area.

Here is the lsusb output:

~]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 045e:007d Microsoft Corp. Notebook Optical Mouse
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 5986:0315 Acer, Inc
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0930:6545 Toshiba Corp. Kingston DataTraveler 102 Flash Drive / HEMA Flash Drive 2 GB / PNY Attache 4GB Stick

but what i have been able to investigate the problem isnt related with the USB device detection (else would be possible to start the boot from it), and as we can see from the log (pressing ATL+F3):

mounting /dev/sda on /tmp/media as type iso9660
mount failed: Invalid argument

the mount fails due to some invalid argument.

I've fixed USB 3.0 detection in latest dracut, this should be ok in the next live builds

Comment 9 Simple 2012-05-10 23:58:26 CEST
But its not related with USB 3 detection, this is a problem that happens in USB 2, and like i told y before i use to use USB 2 ports.

And everytime i used USB 3 ports it detected the usb pen disk and the install starts but then stops like i did described.

Summary: its not possible install Mageia 2 through a USB device => Impossible install Mageia 2 through a USB pen disk

Comment 10 Simple 2012-05-23 16:31:34 CEST
This continues being a valid bug in Mageia 2 official release.
Comment 11 Dave Hodgins 2012-05-23 21:07:16 CEST
How are you putting the iso image on the usb drive?

dd if=Mageia-2-i586-DVD.iso of=/dev/sd? bs=1M

replacing sd? with the correct device for the drive, should work.
On my system, sdc is a usb stick.

# blkid /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc: LABEL="Mageia-2-i586" TYPE="iso9660"

Most of the 15 or so installs I did in testing in the last two days
before the release were done this way.
Comment 12 Simple 2012-05-25 02:27:36 CEST
Doesnt matter if i use dd in linux, or rufus or other in Windows, the result is always the same.

And now listen the weirdest part, if i have a DVD in the CDROM, the install goes without any issue, but the install that started from a USB pen disk moves to the DVD.

I can continue the install using the USB pen disk, but i need to answer "No" to some questions, appears a list of severall devices to continue the isntall and i choose Hard Drive, and then appears my HDD and the USB listed, then i choose the USB, and the install goes.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

I dont think its a good move to post the same message in all bug reports just because now cauldron is closed.

I think you should see the bugs one by one, and if you did that you would easily see that there was already enough info to say that this bug is valid in Mageia 2.

This was totally unnecessary, and very annoying.

not totally unnecessary, but will be better next time, (like excluding a lot more bugs) of the mass pinging.

Comment 16 egc 2013-05-30 09:50:53 CEST
This bug is still valid in Mageia 3 with the difference that the solution shown in Comment #c12 does not work either.
After the "Detecting USB Mass Storage" it shows "Please choose the CDROM drive to user for the installation". Why does it show this if i am installing from USB stick?
If i go on Cancel and choose the USB stick out of a list of hard drives it gives me a "Error: I can't find a valid filesystem (tried: ext2, vfat, ntfs, reiserfs). Make sure the partition has been cleanly unmounted." That's it, i can not go on.

Ok, it seems like there was an error in my new PC. Fact is that after taking it completely from electricity (not just rebooting or shutting it down), now USB devices are recognized normally ... I have no idea what was the problem before ... so i close it hoping this error does not appear again ;-)
