Description Andy Liebman 2012-04-23 18:50:38 CEST
After installing all Cauldron updates today, I noticed my pulseaudio volume control no longer runs. I get:

"Connect to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s"

I also get an error when trying to launch "alsamixer"

[andy@localhost ~]$ alsamixer
Home directory /home/andy not ours.
ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

cannot open mixer: Connection refused

I am not sure when these problems began. A few weeks ago both were working fine. Sound still plays in Skype and in web apps but cannot make adjustments, and cannot boost mic level.

Okay, my home directory was somehow owned by root:root. Chowning it to andy:andy fixed this problem. As for how it got to belong to "root", I have no idea. Maybe I ran dolphin as root. If I'm going to do that (i.e., to browse my OS X partition) I usually do "su -" first so as not to mess with anything in my home dir.

Thanks for the tip.
