Description Wolfgang Bornath 2012-04-17 11:18:45 CEST
Description of problem:

Wanting a small system I installed vlc with the '--no-suggests' option. Resulting in a vlc without sound. After investigating I found out that the needed plugin was not installed because it is a mere 'suggest'.

IMHO a media player without sound makes not much sense. PA being the default sound system of Mageia the necessary vlc-plugin-pulse should be a requirement instead of a suggestion.

vlc version: vlc-2.0.1-1.mga2.tainted

you can have sound without pulseaudio, it's only more complex,so I'am for closing as wontfix, but let see that with the maintainer.

Comment 2 Wolfgang Bornath 2012-04-17 17:06:15 CEST
"You can have" many more things. Point is that Mageia is establishing PA as default sound system (at least this is what I keep reading all the time) so IMHO it is at least debatable to distribute a media player without a PA plugin as required package.

That's why I filed it as a bug.

Took me quite some time to find out because I was looking for a bug in vlc.

Well, there might be people who still use alsa and don't want to hear anything about pulse, but they still want to use vlc. If you are using urpmi with --no-suggests option then you get what you want. For normal user there are no problems here.. His/her vlc will work :)

Well, opinions differ and in the end somebody has to decide. As I am not the one who decides I have to live with the "WON'T FIX" and remember this for future installations.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

I'm leaning towards resolving this bug as WONTFIX. Any final objections?
