Description Morgan Leijström 2012-04-15 03:25:23 CEST
During boot in safe mode, it stops to ask for password for encrypted LVM partition
But the password question does not show until you press any key.
(so it looks like it just hang)

This is on current cauldron x86_64 installed on SATA drive partitioned with /boot, and then an encrypted LVM holding /, /home, swap.

I've tried several installs with encrypted partitions. Either it comes up in text mode, or it's ask via plymouth. Never have I had to press a key to see the prompt.

Is this still happening for you?

Full update now, still same, but only this machine.

Itstops with display full of USB initialisation stuff, and in lower left corner i only see a blinking cursor.
When i press first button in my key, it immediately prints:

Password /dev/sda5):*

If you remove "quiet" from the command line, I don't think there is an easy way to avoid this.

So I don't think I can realistically fix it. Either use "quiet" or the graphical input method.

If there is some technique I'm not aware of to shut up the kernel output dynamically, please let me know.

Graphical input in safe boot mode?
I did not think it was possible, and possibly not a good idea anyway...

There is no "quiet" parameter in the default kernel line for failsafe boot.

Test:

If i add quiet to kernel line I do get the Password question.

BUT then I miss all scrolling lines of USB detection and whatever - information that could be nice to see when trying to repair something.

I don't disagree that it would be nice, but I'm not sure we've got much option. We have no way (AFAIK) to control the kernel debug output (other than "quiet" via the command line) and as such we can't really control these things.

I'm happy to be proved wrong here, but if that's the trade off, I think we're best sticking with what we have right now (i.e. not using "quiet" and getting the debug). I suspect most people would a) know they had to enter a password and would somewhat expect to enter something and not wait forever before typing something or b) eventually hit return or generally bash the keyboard :p

Like I say if I can be proved wrong then I'm all for doing something about it, but until such times as there is a solution, I think this has to stay in the wontfix state.

Please do update this bug if you find another solution.
