lspcidrake for acer Aspire 5315 laptop and ViewSonix VP171b monitor

Description Reinout van Schouwen 2012-04-10 00:17:24 CEST
Description of problem:
I have a Samsung SyncMaster XL2370 attached as an external monitor to my Asus X56V laptop (Radeon HD3470, 1440x900). Its native resolution is 1920x1080. However, the Gnome 3 screen resolution settings don't allow me to pick a higher resolution than the laptop's monitor, 1440x900. Of course, I did uncheck the 'mirror screens' box.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
0.101-1mga2

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Attach monitor to VGA connector
2. Boot Mageia 2
3. Go to System Settings > Screens
4. Click 'Samsung Electric Company 23"' screen
5. Click 'Resolution' dropdown menu.

Some details about the monitor given by xrandr:

[reinout@localhost status@gnome-shell.2jk.org]$ xrandr --prop | monitor-parse-edid
Name: SyncMaster
EISA ID: SAM05c3
EDID version: 1.3
EDID extension blocks: 0
Screen size: 51.0 cm x 28.7 cm (23.04 inches, aspect ratio 16/9 = 1.78)
Gamma: 2.2
Analog signal
Max video bandwidth: 170 MHz

	HorizSync 30-81
	VertRefresh 56-60

	# Monitor preferred modeline (60.0 Hz vsync, 67.5 kHz hsync, ratio 16/9, 95 dpi)

We need the output of "monitor-edid --MonitorsDB"

Attachment 1965 is obsolete: 0 => 1

Comment 4 Reinout van Schouwen 2012-05-04 00:38:04 CEST
That doesn't give very helpful information:

$ sudo monitor-edid --MonitorsDB
No monitor range data in EDID.

Yes, the monitor is attached and showing image as I executed the monitor-edid command.
Comment 5 Thierry Vignaud 2012-05-04 00:55:19 CEST
Any more luck with eg: "monitor-probe radeon"

I've patched the MonitorsDB file but XFdrake only detects the laptop screen (flat panel 1440x900), no external monitors. I see no difference in behavior from the Gnome system settings.

does XFdrake works better once this patch is applied to /usr/lib/libDrakX?

XFdrake still only shows the laptop screen as the only detected monitor.

Output of monitor-probe radeon is:

EISA ID: CPT1465
EDID version: 1.1
EDID extension blocks: 0
Screen size: 33.1 cm x 20.7 cm (15.37 inches, aspect ratio 16/10 = 1.60)
Gamma: 2.2
Digital signal

	# Monitor preferred modeline (59.9 Hz vsync, 55.5 kHz hsync, ratio 16/10, 110 dpi)
	ModeLine "1440x900" 88.75 1440 1488 1520 1600 900 903 909 926 -hsync -vsync
Comment 10 Reinout van Schouwen 2012-05-05 00:49:01 CEST
Hmm. Note that the preferred modeline says 1440x900 which is actually the laptop's resolution.
The resolution shown in comment #0 by xrandr --prop (1920x1080) is the correct one.
Comment 11 Reinout van Schouwen 2012-05-05 00:53:23 CEST
I've managed to manually set my external monitor to the right resolution by doing:
xrandr --newmode 1920x1080 148.5 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode 1920x1080 VGA-0
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080

This is, however, not a permanent solution.

try even harder to get EDID

And does it work better with that patch?
You'd first to revert the "try harder to get EDID" one.
(using "patch -R" instead of patch)
Comment 13 Reinout van Schouwen 2012-05-25 00:33:14 CEST
After applying that patch, I still see no difference. (Is XFdrake even supposed to offer external/secondary monitor configuration?)

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja
Comment 15 Reinout van Schouwen 2012-05-29 00:29:51 CEST

Different hardware should be tracked in a different bug report. Can you open a new one?

No problem, but it seems that the bug speaks to an underlying problem, not a hardware-specific one.
Comment 22 Samuel Verschelde 2015-05-22 16:27:03 CEST
I can't say, maybe Thierry can. If he doesn't answer I suggest to open a new bug and add this one in the see also field. The worst that can happen is it's closed as duplicate later.

Comment 24 Hoyt Duff 2015-05-22 19:38:28 CEST
I just discovered that this is actually a bug with LXQT, which places the menu bar at the bottom of the 1280x800 laptop screen, not at the bottom of the external monitor screen which is 1280x1024.

So . . my bug is not THIS bug. Bug 5315 appears to be "fixed" for me.

Switching to LXDE "solves" my problem, so I'll go with LXDE for now. I don't have other DEs installed on this laptop.
Comment 25 Reinout van Schouwen 2015-05-25 11:58:53 CEST
The laptop is dead now, I cannot say if the problem is still reproducable.

Closing as OLD then. If someone still has the issue with that specific hardware, they can reopen of create a new bug report.

Status: NEW => RESOLVED
Resolution: (none) => OLD

Comment 27 Hoyt Duff 2017-07-19 18:39:19 CEST
No longer a problem as of Mageia6, so it was fixed somewhere along the way. Thanks!
