Description Andy Liebman 2012-03-11 19:06:23 CET
I am running the latest Skype video version on Mageia 2 Beta 1 64-bit on a Macbook Pro 8,1 (early 2011) notebook. This notebook has an ATI Graphics card. No problem installing Skype. No problem with the audio. But there are two problems with video.

1. Until about March 5, 2012, when I received video from another Skype user, my Mageia KDE session would immediately go black and I would get returned to a KDE login prompt. This problem seems to have been resolved with the upgrade to the 3.3-rc6 kernel and corresponding fglrx driver. I will keep watching for it.

2. The quality of the video being sent from my laptop to other users is extremely poor sometimes. Quality and frame rate can be fine for 5-10 seconds. Then for 20 or 30 seconds frame rate may go to 1 frame every 5 or 10 secconds, with very pixelated video. Then frame rate and quality gets okay again.

The quality/framerate problem is not a general Linux thing. For instance, I have Mandriva 2011 running on a second. Macbook Pro (slightly older model with an Nvidia graphics chip) and the video I receive on the newer Macbook Pro is always fine.

I have tested this with both wired and wireless connections. I have tried running Skype without the helper script (i.e., /usr/share/skype/skype) and I have also tried modifying the helper script to use LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4lcompat.so instead of v4l2convert.so. Same results all around.

Previously I was running Mandriva 2011 on this same Macbook Pro 8,1 and Skype video was fine.

My conclusion is there may be something wrong with the v4l or v4l2 processing in Mangeia 2.

How can I help you troubleshoot this?

Skype dynamically adjusts transmitted image quality in line with available bandwidth. The low frame rate and pixellated image would be in keeping with this action, so my first impression would be that this is being caused by network issues.
I have seen this effect in action and it resembles your description.

It may be worth verifying the camera and v4l operation by using vlc.
In vlc use CTRL/c to open the capture dialog. Set the capture mode to v4l (whichever version), then set device to /dev/video0 and hit play.
You can check the video quality and then CTRL/j to see the codecs in use. The 'statistics' tab will show stream errors etc.
You can compare this info on both machines.

I will try your suggestion, but I doubt this is relevant. I was testing between two Macbook Pros in my office, with both machines on the wired LAN (with very fast Internet). The video going from the Macbook Pro 5,1 with Mandriva 2011 was always displayed smoothly on the Macbook Pro 8,2 with Mageia 2. However, the reverse was not true. The video coming FROM the Mageia system was poor on the Mandriva 2011 system. I also rebooted the Mandriva 2011 system into OS X and the video coming from Mageia was still poor. And I rebooted the Mageia system into OS X and the video was always good on the Macbook Pro 5,1 system -- whether that was booted into Mandriva or OS X. So, there is nothing physically wrong with the Macbook Pro 8,2 system or camera. It is only a problem when running Mageia.

There may be some sort of incompatibility between the "Facetime" camera on the Macbook Pro 8,2 machine and Video for Linux. But it didn't see this when I was running Mandriva 2011 on the Macbook Pro 8,2 machine.

Hi, I tested VLC as you suggested and the video quality looks excellent on the Mageia laptop. There are no errors detected.

I installed VLC on Mandriva 2011 but it couldn't open my iSight video, so I cannot compare the two computers.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

This bug is STILL Valid for Mageia 2.

On the exact same laptop, I have confirmed that Skype Video transmission when running Kubuntu 12.04 works fine, so my conclusion is that Mageia 2 has something wrong with the way VideoForLinuxv4 hooks into the "Facetime" camera on this laptop.

Please don't blame this problem on Skype. I know it's not a generic Mageia 2 problem either because I have an Acer 5735Z laptop and Skype Video transmission works fine from THAT laptop.

Version: Cauldron => 2

Can you please test with get-skype 4.0.0.8 from Nonfree Updates Testing. Does it change anything or not?

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

I think this problem may be associated with my Macbook Pro. It is a triple boot (OS X 10.8.5, Mageia 3, Windows 8) and all my friends tell me my Skype video is almost frozen all the time -- whether I boot in OS X, Linux or Windows. By contrast, my friends see my Google Hangouts video fine with good motion with any OS.
Comment 11 Manuel Hiebel 2013-11-23 16:13:03 CET
Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
