Description Chris Nicoll 2012-02-24 21:18:49 CET
Description of problem:

After installing Beta 1, on rebooting I get to a graphical login screen but neither my (Logitech) USB mouse nor my (Cherry) USB keyboard responds.

Looking at /var/log/messages from another partition, I see several instances of what to my uneducated eye looks like a problem:

localhost modprobe: FATAL:Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.39.4-5.1-desktop/modules.dep: No such file or directory

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Very, on my machine.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install from beta 1 (32 bit version) on my computer (Core 2 Duo E6700; not too sure what else is relevant).
2. Boot

I've installed twice and tried to repair the installation twice. First time I used the network install iso, and the second time I used the full DVD and didn't do any updates. Both times I selected the default KDE installation. I get to a graphical login screen but neither my (Logitech) usb mouse nor my (Cherry) usb keyboard responds.

Today I installed Beta 2 on the same hardware from the net install iso: problem no longer appears. Fixed?

> tv, thomas, another missing module ?

No. Modules cannot be loaded b/c grub was probably not installed on MBR and it was booting a non mga kernel
It's looking for /lib/modules/2.6.39.4-5.1-desktop/modules.dep ; however "2.6.39.4-5.1-desktop" came from "uname -r" and it looks like a mdv-post-rpm5 kernel and not like a mga kernel:

1) mga kernel went straight from 2.6.38.8-5.mga2 to 3.0.0-0.rc7.2.1.mga2
   ie mga never released a 2.6.39 kernel
2) mga2b1 shiped with kernel-3.2.6
3) indeed 2.6.39.4-5.1 was a mdv kernel:

Status: NEW => RESOLVED
Resolution: (none) => INVALID

Well, that's an embarrassing GRUB configuration screwup.

Apologies.
