Description Morgan Leijström 2012-02-24 10:03:04 CET
Description of problem, How reproducible. Steps to Reproduce:

1) Clear your mind from anything you know about how this works
(newbie mode)

2) Perform any update that modifies configuration file

3) After install that dialog appears, saying one or more configuration files have changed.

(Maybe it should be more clarified that without user action theese changes will be used.)

4) you can click a button for each changed file and see old, new and a diff very nice and clear.

BUT the buttons below need better texts - it is not clear which to press to have it use the new file.

Note: this is from swedish translation, i have not checked english version, but it have been like this for years.

I have not seen this pop-up recently but for me (english or french) it seems clear.

line 2467 and letter iirc
#: ../Rpmdrake/rpmnew.pm:116

http://svnweb.mageia.org/soft/rpmdrake/trunk/po/sv.po?revision=2029&view=markup

Or it was the place of the button ?

Thank you for the quick reply :)
That is the phrases i see.
And swedish translation is following the english version.

Unfortunately i did not take notes about "the whole picture" but i remember getting confused every time i see it, feeling i am not perfectly sure.

Is it just me that get confused by the alternatives?
I am also not sure how to decide which to be used.

First, I think it would be nice with a short explanation why files changed, eventual drawbacks of keeping the old, and risks of using the new.
Possibly by link to wiki page.

Also, i think it is not stated what happens if i do not open this dialog for every file (ther were a bunch listed in the popup before this) : There is should say "if you do not take action below, all current files will be kept without changes" (And maybe: New suggestions will be saved ending in .upgradesuggested)

"You can either remove the .%s file, use it as main file or do nothing.
If unsure, keep the current file (\"%s\")."

1) Remove
I think it should be "Remove new version"

2) Use as main file
=Use new version

3) Do nothing
I think it should be renamed "use old version"

Why 3 alternatives?
Can it not be simplified as:

Which do you want to use?
(select old if you are unsure)
1) Old
2) New

And if choosing the new, the old file should be renamed .old
If choosing the old, it could save the new as .upgradesuggested
..or something.. so the OP can try whenever he have time

Rephrasing the paragraphi i wrote above begginging with "Also":

After installation a dialog listing changed files appear, with a button each to investigate them (leading to teh other dialog with 3 choices)

If i do not investigate the files, but just press OK in the "main" dialog, will it then be for all files like the "Do nothing" alternative for all files, or will it to dhe recommended action (remove .rpmnew). That should be stated.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja
