Description Barry Jackson 2012-01-12 00:26:15 CET
Description of problem:
p54usb requires isl3887usb for the :-
Device 002: ID 06b9:0121 Alcatel Telecom SpeedTouch 121g Wireless Dongle.

This does not seem to be included in the kernel-firmware or kernel-firmware-extra/nonfree packages.

Manually installing the file :-
http://daemonizer.de/prism54/prism54-fw/fw-usb/2.13.25.0.lm87.arm
re-named into /lib/firmware/isl3887usb
from
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/p54#firmware
followed by :-
rmmod p54usb
modprobe p54usb
fixes it.
Without this drakconnect fails in mga1 with :-
"Unable to find network interface for selected device (using p54usb driver)"

This message is a reminder that Mageia 1 is nearing its end of life.
In approximately 25 days from now, Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing
updates for Mageia 1. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it
remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '1'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to
fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later
Mageia version prior to Mageia 1's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not
be able to fix it before Mageia 1 is end of life. If you would still like to see
this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia,
you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version
of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime,
sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia
release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 1 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''1st December''. Mageia 1 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

I'm curious: Why don't you simply add those firmwares, at least for cauldron?

Did you see the date on this original report?

I had forgotten all about it, and have not needed to use that device since.

Feel free to do it if you wish - I'm really short on time and would need to re-research the way these are packaged.

Yes I did :) and saw that it was confirmed for mga4.
Packaging is pretty simple: http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/kernel-firmware-nonfree/current/SPECS/kernel-firmware-nonfree.spec?view=markup

I'll see what I can do ...

Please dont... there is no clear license info for that fw, so it's a no-go

Wouldn't have added it directly :)
But now I remember, I've CC'ed you in the past about those firmwares. Quoting my mail to the author of https://daemonizer.de/:

Hi Florian,

sorry for the delay, I had little time last week.

Sadly there is no official license nor any source code available.

The firmwares have been extracted from different "official" drivers, mostly
from windows drivers. I was told that Connexant (the Company manufacturing
these wireless chips) doesn't mind me distributing these firmware files, but
sadly there is no official statement from them. The only thing I can say is
that so far nobody did complain.

I hope this will help you somehow.

Greetings,
Maxi

and the comment from Anssi was (with Thomas on CC):

AFAIK our policy is no firmware without license except for those
previously distributed with the kernel.

Hence closing this one, there's nothing we can do about this, sadly.

And before I forget: You should get well soon, instead of reading boring bug reports ;)
