Description Joe Da Silva 2011-12-03 07:54:51 CET
Description of problem:
During the install process, Alpha was unable to initialize the build-in BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet or a plug-in PCI Express card containing a BCM5754.

After the install process, and a reboot, I was able login and to configure either chip to work okay. Is the install kernel missing a module?

Tried three times to be certain. !st time was only the built-in 5721, but having failed that, then on 2nd try, I added the PCI card containing the 5754 just in case it was a problem with the 5721, but once again, install failed, but after install I was able to configure to work. Third try re-confirmed that I was unable to get network running during the install screens, therefore there seems to be something different between the install version, and the installed version

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Mageia 2, Alpha1, Dec02,2011

How reproducible:
During install of a new Mageia2, Alpha1, when configuration reaches network setup option, try configuring the ethernet to work, but it fails regardless of which choice of options you choose.
I notice the lights on the router do blink, so there apparently is some activity, but it just does not seem to get through. The lights do not blink rapidly, but more like one blink, then waits several seconds before another blink is seen.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Insert install DVD
2. bootup, do install until you reach menu allowing you to configure timezone, sound, graphics, ethernet...etc. Choose to configure ethernet.
3. Try various options.

The workaround is to skip setting-up the ethernet during install, and configure it after install. Only drawback is you can't do an update of RPMs during the install setup.

Hello, thanks for the bug report.

What is the output of lspcidrake -v ?

lspcidrake output

Built-in BCM5721 is seen as eth0 and the pci card is BCM5754 seen as eth1.
I could remove the BCM5754 if you want, or we could get them both tested to work.

I think you're more interested in the chips, but added info if this helps... The computer in question is a Dell Precision 390

Can you attach your /root/drakx/report.gz file please?
The odds are high the issue is the firmware.
The tg3 driver needs a firmware, which is not free software.

Did another try. When reaching menu and selecting eth0 configuration - Did not try adjusting any settings (kept defaults, such as auto assignment of IP, local.local, etc as per what is expected default wired ethX settings).

Like before... eth0 Failed on Install.

Remove install DVD. Reboot.

Login into newly installed Alpha1, and now eth0 working at this point.

Attaching a fresh report.bug.gz

Pinging, because nothing has happened with this report for more than 3 months, it still has the status NEW or REOPENED.

I think that issue that I encountered described in bug 1138, comment26 is very similar if not the same.

@Joe, can you verify that?

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

Somewhere, somehow it should be clarified that when a NEEDINFO is accomplished the keyword must be removed!

Indeed there's been quite a lot of fixes regarding detecting those cards
