I guess you are using h264, so yes it's need ffmpeg. But not sure it needs a require. Added the maintainer, as I can decide. Assignee:

olav Totem uses packagekit. It should prompt for any missing codecs and offer to install. I don't think we want to put ffmpeg in there though. Totem should be able to play stuff without it. But seems the backend is no working I have installed Mageia 2 Alpha 3 from DVD, and then upgraded to Cauldron (and keep it up-to-date since then). As of clean install, Totem wasn't capable of playing any single video, until I've manually installed gstreamer0.10-{ffmpeg,faad,a52dec,dts}. No PackageKit prompt has been rendered.CC:

mitya If packagekit urpmi backend is not working, then that seems to be the bug to fix. Not add dependencies on totem, right? But I thought ffmpeg wasn't in core. Seems it actually is. Should it be a Suggests or a Requires? Keywords:

If you're the assignee: We'd like to know for sure whether this bug was assigned correctly. Please change status to ASSIGNED if it is, or put OK on the whiteboard instead. If you don't have a clue and don't see a way to find out, then please put NEEDHELP on the whiteboard. Please assign back to Bug Squad or to the correct person to solve this bug if we were wrong to assign it to you, and explain why. Thanks :) **************************** @ the reporter and persons in the cc of this bug: If you have any new information that wasn't given before (like this bug being valid for another version of Mageia, too, or it being solved) please tell us. @ the reporter of this bug If you didn't reply yet to a request for more information, please do so within two weeks from now. Thanks all :-D This message is a reminder that Mageia 1 is nearing its end of life. In approximately 25 days from now, Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 1. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '1'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 1's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 1 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. -- Mageia Bugsquad With Mageia3 alpha2, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is loaded but totem is unable to read a video. Totem read only a theora video without any sound. VLC and Dragon can read videos : mpg, avi, mp4, flv, dv, wmv; ogm VLC is able to read a swf file. May I open a new bug and close this one? Or definitively forget totem? In this case remove it as default reader... (In reply to comment #10) > With Mageia3 alpha2, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is loaded but totem is unable to read > a video. That depends, from what Olav wrote, I understand totem should work without ffmpeg: (In reply to comment #2) > Totem uses packagekit. It should prompt for any missing codecs and offer to > install. I don't think we want to put ffmpeg in there though. Totem should be > able to play stuff without it. If you're sure the problem is not with packagekit again, then please close this bug and open a new one However, if it is basically the same problem as before, then keep this report open and change its version to "cauldron" Totem upstream looks active, btw. http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources/totem/ If you want to start a discussion about switching to another default video player, please do so on the mageia-dev mailing list :) Summary:
Totem needs the plugin GStreamer gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg =>
