Description Kamil Rytarowski 2011-11-26 18:21:48 CET
Description of problem:
Hello!
I've installed Mageia 2 Alpha 1 minimal system (from DVD) and then I encountered that after installation of "task-gnome" and "task-x11" I'm unable to start Gnome3 from tty using "startgnome*"

Error message:
"** WARNING **: Cannot open display: "

It's possible to start X (with Gnome3!).. by typing startx

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install Mageia 2 Alpha 1
2. install task-x11
3. install task-gnome
4. try startgnome or startgnomeclassic

Please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log (copying it before restarting X, or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after reconfiguring and restarting X)

I've reproduced it with WindowMaker too:

1. install minimal system
2. task-x11
3. WindowMaker

startwindowmaker produces:
/usr/bin/xsetroot: unable to open display ''
/usr/bin/wmaker(real_main(main.c:768)): fatal error: could not open display ""
Comment 5 Kamil Rytarowski 2011-11-30 07:37:37 CET
And startx runs WindowMaker correctly.
Comment 6 Kamil Rytarowski 2011-12-17 13:16:20 CET
Seems valid in Mga2 Alpha2
Comment 7 Manuel Hiebel 2011-12-17 13:57:29 CET
IIRC it's more a wrong config for your graphic cards.

Summary: startgnome and startgnomeclassic don't work => start** don't work

Comment 8 Kamil Rytarowski 2011-12-17 15:46:14 CET
I've installed KDE from DVD Mga2_Alpha2. After getting into console (return causes restart of X) and then trying to start X Window Manager by "start*" like startscrotwm there is the same no-effect. I have to run it by "startx"
Comment 9 Kamil Rytarowski 2011-12-17 15:50:16 CET
xinit /path/to/x/window/manager is working
Comment 10 Marja Van Waes 2012-01-19 17:46:03 CET
I don't have the slightest idea which package to assign this to

start* were never intended to work this way.
This is the way it works:
startx startXXXX

eg: to start a second session:
startx startxfce4 -- :1
