Description Thomas Andrews 2024-02-06 21:09:29 CET
Description of problem:
I have two HP printers with duplexing capability, a venerable Deskjet 5650, and an Envy Photo 7858. The 5650 has an optional duplexer installed, while the 7858 has the capability built-in. It's been a while since I tried duplex printing on either, maybe as much as a year, but today when attempting to print out tax forms it did not work correctly on either printer.

The usual process is that the printer will print the first side, wait a few seconds for the ink to dry, then take the page back into the printer and print the other side. Today, the printer prints the first side, ejects it, then prints the second side on another sheet of paper. The first side is printed in a top-to-bottom orientation, while the second is bottom-to-top.

This happened in an MGA9-64 Plasma system, with Okular and with Libreoffice. I was printing in "black cartridge-only" grayscale. Two-sided printing can be set as the default but usually I have it shut off and only activate it in the application when I want it. Today I tried setting it in MCC and/or the HP Device Manager (aka hp toolbox) as well as in the application with no change in results.

The description says it happens on "some" HP printers because I only have the two with duplexing capability. I suspect it would be the same for all, but cannot confirm that speculation myself.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

I suspect this is a hplip problem, but I don't know enough to do more than speculate.

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to print a two-page document on an HP printer with duplexing capability.

You indicate that duplex printing used to work on these printers, useful to know.

I have noted this speculatively as HPLIP, but could it be CUPS? Do we know whether duplex printing works anywhere today?

Assigning globally as different packagers update HPLIP.

And now today, the Deskjet 5450 is working normally. I don't know what changed, except that I shut the computer off at night every night, and have it set to reboot to a clean session every time I boot. Maybe something reset itself.

Sigh. Excuse me while I go bash my head against the wall...
