Freedroid can be obsolete as is dead in upstream and already replaced by freedroidrpg
Should look games can be obsolete what doesn't build anymore and upsteam dead...
Comment 3 Lewis Smith 2024-02-01 07:08:05 CET
Agree with the last point, but the project URL says:
"FreedroidRPG 1.0
Sun Jan 22 2023
FreedroidRPG 1.0 is out! We are proud to announce the biggest FreedroidRPG release yet.
This version has been in the making for 7 years and contains many changes and improvements, representing the work of many contributors.
Source tarball, AppImages, Windows and MacOSX installers are available on ftp.osuosl.org"
and from the Download page
 https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/freedroid/freedroidRPG-1.0/
 freedroidRPG-1.0.tar.gz	2023-01-22 19:05 	227M

Note the recent date. However, we have 1.0.2. I wonder whether our 1.0.2 relates to a RC from 2019. I cannot find it in Cauldron, hence see its commit history, so it may already be dropped - prematurely?

Not knowing who has dealt with this, assigning globally.

I spoke too soon, before confirming the complaint.
In fact, installing & launching it worked:
 $ freedroid
 Found new graphics-theme: classic
 Found new graphics-theme: lanzz
 Game starts using theme: classic
Another game which expects a joystick, I think. But it does things with arrow keys & mouse clicks, and stays up.

Taking the bug back.

ok

the LDXE virtualbox I have, wont invoke:
$ freedroid
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

the Toshiba r930 LXDE install is the same.
both installs were via urpmi task-games.

I have just uninstalled freedoid in the Toshiba, then reinstalled ( urpmi freedroid-1.0.2-23.mga9 )
issue remains.

This is the third bug I've seen about games from task-games not launching. One of them has been fixed and pushed, but I have a couple of questions for the reporter about the other two - and any other bugs there may be.

Have you tried installing these games other than with task-games?
Have you tried the games with other DEs?
Have you tried the failing games on real hardware?

I'm looking for the conditions necessary for the failure, conditions to test that haven't already been tried. If it happened everywhere, that whould make things easier to track down, but since Lewis can't reproduce the faults, there must be some key difference between your system and his. That, of course, will make it harder to find the answer.

A quick look with MCC shows that we have both freedroid and fredroidRPG in the repos. I'd say that complicates things.

Sigh. Ignore that, Ben. I just read your other comments more carefully.

A quick check on this real hardware Plasma system launches freedroid with no problems. Note: fredroidrpg is available, but I did not install it. A quick glance at the filenames makes it look like they could co-exist with no problems.
Comment 11 Marja Van Waes 2024-02-01 16:05:47 CET
when trying to install freedroid in Cauldron, it installs freedroidrpg instead.

Here https://ml.mageia.org/l/arc/dev/2024-02/msg00001.html I read that they are two different games, but that freedroid has been obsoleted in cauldron.

However, after installing freedroid-1.0.2-23.mga9.x86_64.rpm it starts just fine in cauldron. I can fire and move in all directions using my keyboard, but didn't try to figure out what to do after killing all the nasty black things that I could find.

I also have a multi DE install partition, real hardware (Toshiba r930) and freedroid will not play in that partition either

Given that they are different beasts, and heeding comment 3 about a recent new release of freedroid, I do not think there was a case for dropping it. It is still alive, and generally works.
CC'ing DavidG about this. Even if it not his baby, he knows about this sort of thing; and has re-introduced pkgs.

Can't reproduce the issue, please try remove ~/.freedroidClassic
Comment 16 Ben McMonagle 2024-02-02 10:11:05 CET

freedroid now plays
Comment 18 andré blais 2024-02-02 14:51:23 CET
freedroid version 1.0.2-23.mga9
Installed directly, without task games.

Loads on mga9 mate desktop
Seems to work ok, at least for killing those big black blobs.
Not sure how I moved it, but succeeded moving the central figure somewhat.

@Lewis Smith, I think this bug must be closed as invalid
Comment 20 Thomas Andrews 2024-02-02 19:54:16 CET
I created a Vbox LXDE-only guest using the netinstall iso, so it should have all the currently-pushed updates. The only thing I installed beyond the original packages was freedroid. And it runs.

I agree with katnatek. Closing as invalid. Ben, if it comes up again, feel free to reopen.

Resolution: (none) => INVALID
Status: UNCONFIRMED => RESOLVED

Done! now freedroid re-introduced in Cauldron.
