Description Tony Blackwell 2023-11-21 01:56:52 CET
Description of problem:on startup the usual device choice window does not appear. The hidden choice xsane then makes is to my webcam not to a scanner. On clicking scan there is rapid blinking of the scan progress bar and an endless array of static pics from my webcam appear at more than one per second....

I've not found any way within xsane to re-choose the device, after the device-choice popup window fails to appear. Accordingly I think there is no work-around for this.

Background info: HP officejet pro 8600 plus MFP, installed via hp-setup. Has worked fine over several previous versions of Mageia, still working fine on this machine if M8 booted.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xsane 0.999

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.try to scan
2.
3.

The camera, is it USB connected?

Did the problem appear after an update, or you have never had a webcam connected in this situation before?

This is my main PC witnh M9 on another partition. Same issue on cauldron. I've just done a complete reinstall from classic iso, fully updated it but this is otherwise a brand-new install.

... and yes, camera USB connected and has been there in same config for years. xsane was never interested in it before (or at least ranked it after the 2 printers in its choice list at startup).
MFP Printers (HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus) are networked. Hardware layout unchanged over M 7,8,9 at least.

I note also, presumably because it hasn't seen the scanner/printers, that there is no window to choose dpi resolution either. curious that the dpi window isn't there at all however.

Mageia 9
Just fired up XSane on my box which has a USB Epson Perfection V500 scanner (difficult to make work with Linux) switched on.
It first popped only its "Scanning for devices" window, and then exploded into 4 windows:
 Standard Options Perfection V500:007
 Histogram Perfection
Preview Perfection V500:007 (the main scanning one, with icons for actions)
xsane 0.999 Perfection V500 (with menus)
There was no device choice window, but nothing else available. I will re-try with a USB pure printer switched on. [Did: that made no difference, no device choice].

The 4th window has the X & Y resolution dropdowns; is it this Tony is not seeing?
[Annoyance: XSane does not offer 300dpi !]

So Tony, can you say what device choice window you used to see?
And try switching off the camera to see what gets auto-chosen. Possibly disable the different printers one by one.

Xsane has not been updated yet in M9.
I can try this under Mageia 8 later.

Here's where I hang my head in shame.
Too many M9 boxes.
It appears I hadn't got around to running hp-setup on this one :-((

Sorry all. Working now.
I do appreciate all the prompt responses
I'll mark this resolved.

Actually from distro point of view there was nothing to fix ;)

Glad you got the local problem sorted.

And yes we can wish it was less convoluted :)

Resolution: FIXED => INVALID

Adding to my comment 6:
I had not mentioned that for some reason (baffling to me) HPLIP got involved during Xsane's device search. I may at some point have run hp-setup to try & configure an accursed modern wireless-only HP printer; but do not normally do so: without any HP devices...
And as for all those Xsane windows, I see now: they are defined by the 'Window' menu in the small main one.
I tried this issue on Mageia 8, and that variability apart, saw the same thing as for M9.
It would be nice to know what happens when Xsane (or whatever it uses to find devices) finds >1 scanner. Just curiosity.
