Is this a problem of gnome-boxes, or the ISO ?
Have you used it before?
With Mageia? With another Linux?

Where do you think it got Mageia 8 from? An ISO it found?

For info...

"GNOME Boxes is an application of the GNOME Desktop Environment, used to access virtual systems. Boxes uses the QEMU, KVM, and libvirt virtualization technologies.
GNOME Boxes requires the CPU to support some form of hardware-assisted virtualization (AMD-V or Intel VT-x, for example)"

From the project page:
"Virtualization made simple
Select an operating system and let Boxes download and install it for you in a virtual machine.
Features:
Download freely available operating systems.
Automatically install CentOS Stream, Debian, Fedora, Microsoft Windows, OpenSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Ubuntu."

From the project Help:
"Create a box
When Boxes is launched, the collection view opens, displaying your existing boxes. If you haven't yet created a box, an introductory message is displayed.
Click New in the top left corner to launch the box creation wizard.
At the wizard's Source Selection screen, choose a source to determine the type of box you want to create. A local virtual machine can be created from:
An ISO found by Boxes.
Installation media on a CD/DVD/USB drive.
A local ISO file (if not found automatically above)."

This just means Mageia 9 is not in the gnome-boxes database of known operating systems. From

  https://feborg.es/identifying-oses-in-boxes/

you should just pick a similar one. It works fine for me if I select Mageia 8.

Have you added your user ID to the kvm group?

I can't click on create , will try again after do the second but i have to rebuild the frustration make me delete the rpm for version 45, but i not think my hardware can do kvm, i understand the cpu need to have support for that
Comment 6 katnatek 2023-09-29 21:41:59 CEST
Thats all my hardware is too old for modern version of virtualization technologies, virt-manager say /dev/kvm is not there
VirtualBox fail with VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).

I guess this is Invalid in some sense, let you decide that
Comment 7 Lewis Smith 2023-09-29 22:04:28 CEST
Looks like it; and thanks for your research about it.
From comment 1 "GNOME Boxes requires the CPU to support some form of hardware-assisted virtualization (AMD-V or Intel VT-x, for example)".

@Martin
Thanks for your encouraging & helpful comments. I saw no mention of it needing to 'know' about ISO Linux flavours, and you explain why katnatek saw 'mageia 8'. That link in your comment 4 looks vital information.
We have at least learned something about the application.

Resolution: (none) => INVALID
Status: NEW => RESOLVED

My 2012 system supports it. Most likely it's disabled in the bios settings.
The terminology varies between different bios/uefi firmware creators and
even in different versions.

See the links for different vendors listed in step 2 at

Could be different in each hardware the best is make a generic test like:

Virtualization software need the machine virtualization support is enabled,
but usually are disabled by default, we recommend read this link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enable-virtualization-on-windows-11-pcs-c5578302-6e43-4b4b-a449-8ced115f58e1 , where maybe you can find how to enable virtualization support for you machine

>
I can take a picture with my phone and upload here or in the errata if you feel that could helps
