Description Pascal Drabik 2023-06-19 19:34:06 CEST
Description of problem:

I have a X670 Aorus Elite AX motherboard with a AMD Ryzen 7 7700X processor. It seems that Mageia 8 does not recognize the integrated graphics processor. Mageia is installed, but there is no graphical interface.
I can install Kubuntu 22.04 and the system seems to work perfectly well. The information about hardware there provides "GFX1036" for the Graphics processor, and states that I am not using any proprietary drivers.

Thank you for the report.
It is possible that Mageia 8 does not recognise what looks to be very recent hardware. We are testing Mageia 9.

How did you install Mageia? From what ISO? Did that work in graphical mode?
How does the system boot up?
You say "there is no graphical interface"; but do you have an otherwise working system with the command line?

The GFX1036 needs at least Mesa 22.1 to work. As Mageia 8 is already 2 years old and only provides Mesa 21.3 it is not possible to get it work.

As Lewis already said, Mageia 9 release is nearing and comes with Mesa 23 which supports the GFX1036.

If this is a new install, I would recommend to actually install Mageia 9 now to get latest drivers, it is pretty stable already.

Maybe first try a Live system, with persistence for updating.

I see on dev mail list that one of our packagers are working on the AMD Pro proprietary drivers for Mageia 9, and users testing.

Asking if mesa and whatever required on mga8 can be updated.
- if not, close as wontfix.

Adding the kernel option xdriver=modesetting or xdriver=vesa may work. Also see
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_8_Errata#Graphics

If you're willing, please try Mageia 9. Currently in beta testing, but close
to being ready for the release candidate to start testing.

   Dear All,

Thanks a lot really for your very prompt reactions.

I think also that my the ISO image I am using might be too old for the motherboard. But I thought that after having installed the system, this could be fixed by updating the installation.

I have been using a live version of Mageia 8 "Mageia-8-Live-Plasma-x86_64", in which the file DATE.txt provides: Mon 22 Feb 2021 12:23:00 AM CET

This is the way I install Mageia on various computers. Up to now, things were really going smoothly.

But this time, when I boot the live version, I do have a graphical interface, but with a very, very low resolution, compared to what I would expect. Things are going well anyway up to the moment when I have to reboot the computer such that I start the newly installed system. Then the display just provides some messages related to USB and does nothing else, instead of bringing the login window. If I "switch" to an alternate terminal, using ALT+CTRL+F2 (or something similar;-), that I have a system prompt where I can login and use the computer via a terminal.

I have tried using Mageia 9, beta 2. There things are a bit better. I do have a graphical login interface, but using a 0Hz refresh rate. Once the system was installed, I was not able to login. I was only able to provide the password and then nothing was reacting.

What is interesting is that I can install without troubles Kubuntu 22.04. I tried to see whether I could bring some libraries from Kubuntu, but my understanding of the system is not good enough.

If it could help, I discovered something called "GFX1036" that seems to be related the the graphics processor of the motherboard.

I will investigate further with the live version of Mageia 9, that I will use to install

   Thanks again for your time.

   Best regards,

Pascal.

Hi,

Further to my previous message, I would like to informa you that I tried indeed the live version of Mageia9 (that I downloaded yesterday) and install the system on my new computer.

Now things seem to work very well. So I do not understand what was the problem I have got yesterday.

During the process of the installation, I just got an error message towards the end of the upgrading process about an issue regarding mariadb.

So I guess I will proceed with Mageia9 , perhaps sending you possible comments.

In any case, thanks a lot to the whole Mageia team for your work. This is actually the best GNU/Linux distribution that I know.

Thanks. Closing as invalid, as nothing has been changed in Mageia for this
bug report.

The iso images do not get updated once a version of Mageia has been released,
with the exception of the netinstall iso images, which is the preferred way
to install on hardware that the other iso images do not support.

In this case, with Mageia 9 being so close to being ready to release, it made
sense to suggest it.
