Whatsapp-for-linux konsole output

Description Jose Manuel López 2023-04-25 09:15:02 CEST
Description of problem:I can't paste a image, with Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v in whatsapp-for-linux. Some images are pasted but others not. The app has random performance with this, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. The image does not paste, or if it does, it is not recognizable and the file is not sent. It also happens with videos in different formats, such as mp4.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):Whatsapp for linux and Mageia 9

How reproducible: Install whatsapp-for-linux and test to paste from some folder a image whit the commands Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install whatsapp-for-linux.
2. Copy and paste a image or video from some folder.
3. The image does not stick or is not recognizable.

The image pasted isn't recognizable and whatsapp don't send this file

This is a screenshot of a image pasted in whatsapp-for-linux for send a group chat. The jpg file isn't recognizable.

I have tried to change the format image from gimp, exporting the image in others formats as png, tif, bmp... none works...

Sometimes, directly the image don't paste in whatsapp-for-linux.

Whatsapp-for-linux konsole output

This file is the output of whatsapp-for-linux from terminal. There are some bugs of gtk, but I don't know if these bugs affect to attach files

Maybe compare a local build following:
https://github.com/eneshecan/whatsapp-for-linux#build--run

If that also fails the same way then report upstream:
https://github.com/eneshecan/whatsapp-for-linux/issues

There don't seem to be any existing upstream reports of this issue.

@Jose
Can you ask on a forum whether other people have the same problem?

For the terminal output, can you please re-do it:
1)
 $ LANG=C whatsapp-for-linux        [For English - I think]
2)
 Do an image copy/paste operation such you describe, in case that gives a clue.

Hello Jose Manuel.

I have the same issue as you and have always thought of it as a quirk of it being a hack for web.whatsapp.com.
Yes, it is annoying when it doesn't work.

Sometimes it works when I reload the app by hitting F5 or Ctrl-R, sometimes not. It's hit and miss.

I'm following the development and am running whatsapp-for-linux from git master at all times.

I have seen a posible solution here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/webkit2gtk-imgpaste

This solution is quite invasive and depends on if the webkit packager is willing to incorporate these patches.

Thank you Stig for commenting.
> I am ... running whatsapp-for-linux from git master at all times
Encouraging.

This looks like an Arch special. One wonders why webkit upstream do not incorporate it. Agreeing with Stig, it would be dicey for Mageia to implement it, have our own version of webkit2gtk.
Remember it does not just affect whatsapp-for-linux, it looks generic GTK.

I think we should close this 'wontfix', meaning 'cannot fix'. How to poke webkit2 upstream?
