Description of problem:

I am investigating a cauldron Plasma problem where the Plasma desktop icons can reshuffle themselves.

The position of those icons are held here:

/home/wilcal/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

[Containments][1][General]
ToolBoxButtonState=topcenter
ToolBoxButtonX=610
positions=6,15,desktop:/nuc.o..........

This file appears to be normally updated during the logout, warm boot or poweroff process. If the icons are reshuffled this file will follow that.

In my searching around I'm seeing random mention of the problem on other distros using Plasma.
But being reported differently as its random.

When they reshuffle they seem to reshuffle to the same places
Regardless if the desktop icons are locked or not

I've never seen this issue on Xfce

As I research this I'll post here on this bug.

Thank you for the report. Annoying but not crippling.
You say a Cauldron system, implying it is not related to the M9 Beta ISOs.

Do you know e.g. fom the PAD or QA-discuss or IRC whether other Plasma testers are seeing the same thing?

Many thanks for helping with this VERY confusing issue
I've seen it from time to time on M8 Plasma but very rarely

BTW deleting the: /home/wilcal/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

file duplicates the situation.

A real general way to see other people struggling with the same thing do a Google search on: "kde plasma restart desktop without reboot"
or some such search. Quite a lot of references to it.

When the plasma desktop icons shuffle

I have captured the:

[Containments][1][General]
ToolBoxButtonState=topcenter
ToolBoxButtonX=399
positions=......

text from the /home/wilcal/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

file. Then I copy, paste and save that

[Containments][1][General]
ToolBoxButtonState=topcenter
ToolBoxButtonX=399
positions=......

section and do a ctrl/shift/backspace logout then log back in and the desktop goes back to normal.

Thank you Bill for this what looks like valuable information; except I could not see to where you were pasting the lines you cite. Just those 4 lines?

My own system '.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc' does not have the lines at all.
