Description of problem: attempting to set up a laser colour printer (Kyocera ECOSYS P5021cdn) the printer is not able to be set up using USB cable. (cable is good as USB printing from Mga8 is ok)

Printer can be set up via network (IPP) after setting URI. printer is not detected as the correct printer, generic colour laser and correct drivers need to be set manually.

(aside: Mga9-beta Gnome Live sets up printer as a network printer automatically after starting s-c-p, and correctly sets up printer with correct make and model and uses the driver-less .ppd)

mate DE is affected.
Cinnamon DE is not affected

as Mate only appears to be affected , have created a new bug 31542

Not sure why you did that. The other bug is identical apart from comment 2 here. It is odd that the desktop should make a difference.
Some questions:
- the other desktops (except Cinnamon) from the same classic ISO?
- 64-bit?
- do other ISO testers see the same thing?

And generic: does the shorter 'lsusb' output suffice for what lspcidrake shows in this case?
