Attachments: Easy way to find signature setting

Description Lloyd Osten 2022-11-01 14:17:48 CET
Description of problem: While trying to set up Kmail 5.21.1 (22.08.1) (I did a netinstall of Mageia 9)

I can't attach any type of signature file...I tried all the options....none of which work

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Kmail 5.21.1 (22.08.1)

How reproducible: Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Kmail 5.21.1 (22.08.1)
2. Go to Settings and configure an account.
3. Add a signature (or attempt to) No signature gets added....I tried all the options....none of them work (I didn't try Vcard)
Comment 1 sturmvogel 2022-11-01 15:06:14 CET
Can you be more specific:
- does it not work to edit the signature or read from the signature file?
- does it not attach the signature to a new email?

Works flawlessly here. I can add a signature via the free text editor, or select a file to read the signature from. The signature gets applied for each new mail.

Did you try a new user?

I also will try this if someone can point me to where/how signatures are defined. I have imported an account, and can find nowhere to define this: looked in all the menus, configurations etc I could find. Creating a message, append signature is greyed.
No time to look wider.
TIA

Lewis, you need to open the accounts/Identities page in Kmail settings. I attach a better manual with pictures from KDE here:

Easy way to find signature setting

Only for you Lewis :D
I made a screenshot for you to find the relevant setting fast and easy.

[collision: I was ahead of you]
Re comment 4: Thanks! A lot of digging.

After defining a signature as indicated, I managed to create (but queued it, did not send) a message for which 'Insert-Append signature' did work. I tried this with both some defined text, and a given file: both appended OK.

kmail-22.08.1-1.mga9 under LXDE. Do we have to try under Plasma? Groan. Will do.
Comment 7 sturmvogel 2022-11-01 20:31:56 CET
I have done it under Plasma already.
Comment 8 Lewis Smith 2022-11-01 20:41:26 CET
[another collision]
Same good results under Plasma.
Both defined text, and given file, appended fine 'Insert-Append signature'.

@Lloyd
Please confirm the version of kmail:
 $ rpm -q kmail
and whether you tried to add signatures the same way. And what desktop.

Perhaps we are barking up the wrong tree:
"3. Add a signature (or attempt to) No signature gets added"

Does this in fact mean that on the screen Kmail-Settings-Configure kmail, select account, Modify-Edit Identity-Signature tab, tick Enable signature, 'Obtain signature test from' choice is not working? I see just 'Input field below | File | Output of command' (and tried the first two OK).
Please clarify this point.

And respond to Frank's comment 1.

My Cauldron system is an upgrade from Mageia 8, whereas Lloyd's is a virgin installation. We have seen some problems with virgin installs not evident in upgrades.
Comment 9 sturmvogel 2022-11-01 20:44:48 CET
The installation where i tested it was a clean Mageia-Cauldron-netinstall-nonfree-x86_64.iso.
Comment 10 Lloyd Osten 2022-11-02 12:23:12 CET
I did not realize that enabling the signature and inserting the signature were two different things. Once I enabled both of them, it did work properly. I clicked the box that said "use HTML". I couldn't get that to work. Kmail added the one line of HTML code as just a line of code and did not try to interpret it. The same line of code works perfectly in Thunderbird (I don't know any HTML)
BTW, I was using the Plasma desktop.

The HTML editor gives you the possibility to chose size, color, fonts, and much more. You either edit your signature via the buttons in the editor (size. font, color, ...)or you need to know proper HTML-syntax.

Based on your last comment and Lewis and mine findings that it works as expected:
Closing as INVALID.
