Did you already check systemsettings and tried to change it? Created attachment 13280 [details]

System Settings
(In reply to sturmvogel from comment #1) > Did you already check systemsettings and tried to change it? Change it where? See latest screenshot. There is nowhere there splash screen to see on your screenshots? Do you maybe mean the bootloader/grub2 screen (on this part of the screenshot it's nearly impossible to read anything...) Here's the correct screenshot
(In reply to sturmvogel from comment #6) > There is nowhere there splash screen to see on your screenshots? Do you > maybe mean the bootloader/grub2 screen (on this part of the screenshot it's > nearly impossible to read anything...) Sorry, I sent the wrong one the first time. This one should be readable. It is, thank you. So it is clearly a Grub2 problem. Is the reference to Cauldron also nonsense? Can you say the origin of your Mageia 8 system? Was it upgraded from Mageia 7? At what point did the erroneous boot menu start: after installation/upgrade, or after a subsequent update? To confirm what version of Mageia you are running, for example: * If you press Esc quickly after selecting the boot entry, you will see a lot of text scrolling past. Early on, there is a line with colour that says "Welcome to Mageia x", which you can note. * From a terminal, $ cat /etc/release * From a terminal, $ inxi -S To tell us something about your system, please post the output of $ inxi -MSp Have you tried re-installing Grub2? For example, MCC-Startup-Install how the system boots [English translation may be inexact]. CC:

lewyssmith I'm not sure off hand which file grub uses to build the menu. I think it's one of /etc/lsb-release from the package lsb-release, /etc/mageia-release from the package mageia-release-common or /usr/lib/os-release also from mageia-release-common. One of those two packages didn't get updated properly on that system when Mageia 8 was released. What's the output of "urpmq --list-media active" and "urpmq --list-url|grep core/release" and "rpm -q lsb-release mageia-release-common"? CC:

davidwhodgins This is GRUB, not GRUB 2, and a known problem (bug 27228), although I can't explain why John is only seeing it now. CC:

mageia Thanks for the comments. I thought we had seen the last of Grub (in lieu of Grub2) ages ago. As for that earlier bug, this is clearly a duplicate - if it follows an upgrade. So John has questions to answer. Would the problem be resolved by installing grub2, chucking out grub , then re-installing the bootloader? (In reply to Lewis Smith from comment #12) > Thanks for the comments. I thought we had seen the last of Grub (in lieu of > Grub2) ages ago. In answer to previous questions, my Mageia 8 is indeed an upgrade from Mageia 7, and the bug only appeared on April 1 this year, well after the upgrade. In as much as this is a trivial bug of no real consequence I don't want to get involved in an endlessly complex fix for something so minor. So my question is, how complex is updating to grub2? That is, assuming it will fix the bug. In Mageia Control Centre / Install & Remove Software there is a padlock icon next to the grub package, which implies that it cannot simply be removed. To me that suggests that simply getting the grub2 package would only be the start of a long complex procedure involving, among other things, editing numerous configuration files. My searches seem to find overly complex and error prone, not to mention time consuming, procedures which are way in excess of what should be required to fix something so trivial. If I could simply download the grub2 package and do a reboot that would be fine. Otherwise I'm wasting time over nothing. So what is your advice? I didn't test this (because grub was replaced ages ago on all of my machines) but this should work: - install grub2 (and all deps) via MCC - go into MCC -> Boot -> set up boot system - chose Grub2 ... You shouldn't need to install the grub2 packages first - drakboot should do that automatically. (In reply to Martin Whitaker from comment #15) > You shouldn't need to install the grub2 packages first - drakboot should do > that automatically. Thanks everybody. I got grub2 installed without any drama. It just says Mageia, without any version number, so that's an improvement over displaying Mageia 7 rather than the correct Mageia 8. Nice easy fix. Thanks again guys. You can consider this bug resolved. Thank you everyone for your contributions.
