Thank you for the reportand apologies for the angst. > It seems that ENVY 6400 is not yet supported by HP http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-HEWLETT-PACKARD shows nothing for '6400' under HP, nor 'ENVY' at all. If this is a very new device, alas, you may be right. Have you looked at HP support for Linux support for this model? Your comment 0 shows that lsusb finds the device. For confirmation of what your system sees, please post the O/P of: $ inxi -J $ scanimage -L # sane-find-scanner CC:

lewyssmith Hi, According to this link: https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2021/05/hp-driver-hplip-3-21-4-released-hp-envy-6400/, version 3.21.4 is needed for HP6400 whereas Mageia 8 provides 3.21.2. Best regards, Nico. CC:

nicolas.salguero So an hplip update would fix this? Or just partly? Bug 30065 CC:

fri The last release is now Version: 3.21.12 Mageia 8 provides 3.21.2 (2021-03-08) HP produces each year as many new models as a bishop can bless! It is time to have an update... Thank you Nicolas for the pointer, reinforced by Pierre. We do already have in Cauldron versions 3.21.4/6/12. hplip has no particular maintainer, so obliged to assign this bug to everyone. Summary:

Scanner of multifunction HP6400 not found. hplip needs updating for Mageia 8 (already is in Cauldron) This post will contain speculations and deductions that may be completely wrong, so please don't take it as verifiable fact. However... https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index lists the HP ENVY Pro 6400 series printers as having been supported since hplip 3.20.5. However, that same page lists the printer as needing the hp plugin. https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/binary_plugin.html contains a list of printers that require the plugin, and why. The list is out of date, going only up to hplip version 3.17.5, and only mentioning Laserjet printers, but that doesn't mean it's completely useless in this situation. The heading does say that more printers will be needing the plugin in the future, including some inkjet models. If you look at the printers on the list, you'll see that many of them need the plugin for "scanning support." I suspect your printer is one of those that needs the plugin for exactly that reason. Moreover, I suspect you may have fallen victim to Bug 10072 - "HPLIP doesn't upload printer firmware automatically." As I said, it's mostly speculation on my part. I don't have that model of printer, so I have no way to confirm any of what I've written here. However, I do think it might be something that should be investigated. CC:

Hi, hplip-3.22.4-1.mga8 solves bug 10072. Does it also fixes your issue? Best regards, Nico. The owner of the multifunction HP6400 lives far from me. I just receive the confirmation that his HP6400 works fine. I close the bug report with a big “Thank You”. Resolution:
