Select automatic (the default). Xorg or Wayland will use the EDID info returned for the monitor's preferred mode. See the output of ... monitor-get-edid |monitor-parse-edid That result will be used early in the boot and by most desktop environments. Both kde plasma and gnome will override the setting based on user settings when they take over the display. CC:

Now it can be used to override the recommended settings returned to X11 by the monitor, but is not normally needed. In most cases, the best results are obtained by not having an xorg.conf file, and letting X11 select the correct settings dynamically. mcc will allow selecting specific frequencies and resolutions based on what's in the hardware database, which is based on info from the manufacturers, or by using the custom option and manually specifying the frequencies. Note that older CRT monitors are at risk of being destroyed by using frequencies outside of their supported ranges. Again, note that kde plasma and gnome will both override anything set at the system level. The system level settings will be used by the other desktop environments, and during login only. I suspect this is academic, in that these days monitors are generally handled automatically or by default generic choices. Would not 'generic monitor' do the trick?
