Description Kristoffer Grundström 2021-10-01 02:22:39 CEST
Description of problem: My suggestion to make translation more visual than textual is to stop using various time consuming steps to translate an app or a app menu entry and that we release a so called translation mode that can be activated in drakconf for instance for the specific desktop environment (Could be a menu entry in the window manager lightdm for instance) so that when you login to the desktop that you want to help translate you start translating apps and settings live in front of you just by rightclicking on a button or a menu entry and type the translation (You should also be able to see the original string above so you don't forget what you're translating). You finish the translation by clicking on a check mark or something similar to confirm the change. This a more visual approach then telling a user that they have to download the po from another website that tells them to register in order to start translating or that you have to download the po from the source archive or even that you need to go to Transifex to register and then start translating there. After all we do have hook scripts for Transifex already so that when we translate on Transifex and save it, the translation is updated in our svn or git if I'm not mistaken so the technology to do like I propose here already exists to some extent. My way is a live/direct approach so that people can see where the actual translation can be seen and what happens at the certain action.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 2.06-1

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start your computer.
2. When getting to the login window, click the menu at the top to switch to a different desktop environment.
3. In the list you have the usual DE's installed, but you also have a DE with Translation mode in the list.
4. Choose for instance MATE (Translation mode) and give the password and click to login or hit Enter/Return button.
5. Once the desktop is fully loaded there will be a short example clip on how to start translating, either automatically loaded at login or using a clip in /home/$USER/Video/.

I hope that my idea makes any sense.

I admit I found it confusing, but this is not an area I know at all.
I suspect that it will be bounced, since it looks as if all the display managers (& desktops ?) would need tweaking.
However, I launch the bug into the system for more learned comment.
Assigning initially to Rémi who does 'transifex-client', so might appreciate what this aims at. Air it, or pass it on, or sit on it, as you see fit.
