Updated to the reference kernel.
Seamless reboot to Mate desktop, NFS shares mounted.
Stress tests completed.
No changes in desktop behaviour.

Kernel: 5.10.45-1.mga7 x86_64
Quad Core: Intel Core i7-4790
NVIDIA GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] driver: nouveau v: kernel

Losing the nvidia graphics driver is the only thing to note.  Otherwise the reboot was uneventful and the desktop runs without any issue.

Not much space on this partition so the source files do not get installed.
$ df -h
/dev/sda7                  17G   16G  808M  96% /

35 scheduled update packages installed OK.
Letting this run for a while.
