Attachments: Selection of french keyboard with the installer
US keyboard layout is still showed as the selected one

Description christian barranco 2021-01-24 09:19:16 CET
Description of problem:
I want an english version of Mageia to more easily write Wiki and bug report.
However, I have a french keyboard. So, during the installation, I select English language and a french keyboard. However, the installer still shows an US keyboard was chosen despite I chose a french one (see attachments)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible: always with beta2 iso

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start on beta2 iso and launch the installation
2.Select english language
3.On the keyboard selection page, select More and pick up French keyboard (image 1)
4.The installer still shows US keyboard as selected layout (image 2) while the french is active (I checked, the french layout is actually active)

Thank you for the report, and the useful screenshots - which clarify at once where the fault lies. This was a problem in the past, long ago, which was fixed for the ISOs.
It was/is true that SDDM initially showed USA locale, and only changed it to (in my case) French when starting to log in. I do not remember seeing that lately

Please say which ISO you used ('ls -l' its file), or netinstall. For a long time the French AZERTY k/b has been offered in the short list shown in the second screenshot, without going to the full list.
I am updating my Classic ISO image to
 4486879232 2021/01/13 23:33 Mageia-8-rc-x86_64.iso
and can try it later without actually installing anything.

See also Bug 22745 Bug 23877
but neither complains of the chosen v shown difference at this early stage, only later in the installation - which you say is as-chosen AZERTY, not QWERTY (which was the case in those earlier bugs).

Hi
Indeed, bug 22745 is not the same issue.
I used the follow iso :
-rw-r--r-- 1 christian family 4574445568 8 janv. 09:58 Mageia-8-beta2-x86_64.iso

sha512 key:

No. keymap are always dependant of selected Locales.

If locale is EN_US, the US keymap is installed. But, you can later install the french azerty keymap and set it as your prefered one.

But, if you want to test programs/applications in English and having a French speaking OS for general purpose, you should install in French locale and have de facto the french azerty one.

To launch a program/application/cli tools, and to have is GUI/output in English,
simply do:

$ LANG=C command

where command is the name of the program.
You can also substitute LANG=C by LANGUAGE=EN

Hi Aurelien

Not sure I follow you.
I can confirm the keyboard layout was changed to FR during the installation, despite the language was set to EN_US.
I am sure because when I enter the user during the installation, the keyboard layout is the FR_FR one.
After reboot, the keyboard layout is still FR_FR.

So, there is a mismatch on the installer info and the layout set.

I have just tried (started) a Classic install from:
 4486879232 Ion 13 23:33 Mageia-8-rc-x86_64.iso
 Wed 13 Jan 2021 11:31:41 PM CET
on real hardware. And confirm the fault:
I chose UK English language from the initial language screen; the first K/B screen showed a pre-selected UK layout; -> the 'more' screen (because it is not now listed), chose French Azerty (standard). On returning to the initial k/b screen, the pre-selected UK one was still shown selected.
(I did not go further - too far - to try the k/b to see what it really was.
I admit to liking those installations which give you a chance to test your k/b choice).

Assigning to tools group for the installer. This fault does matter, because the user does not know which k/b the installer really is using.

Summary: US keyboard is still showed as selected layout despite FR keyboard is selected and active => Pre-selected keyboard layout is still shown as selected after another one is selected (and active) from the detailed 'more' list
