Description Philippe Didier 2020-12-15 21:47:43 CET
Firstly
 description fo the hardware :
CPU :AMD Athlon 4200
Graphic card : NVidia GeForce 210 (GT 218)
2 Western Digital internal hdd
1 USB external Toshiba hdd
1 FireWire HDD
First display : DVI Philips 201B
second Display : Sony TV (HDMI)
Soundcard : SoundBlaster Live ! (with Midi Port ans Firewire port)
Wacom Intuos3
Webcam : Quickcam IM Connect
All-in-one HP printer (Officejet 8012)

Beta2 iso used as Live DVD

I- HARDWARE

1) using the nonfree driver (nvidia) very quickly built by dkms
Everything is recognised everything works (even the old soundcard !!!)

There's no more the choice for the display that was proposed in the past (proposing to use only the first display, only the second, cloning both of them, spreading on the two displays etc..)

Nevertheless I can use the plasma configuration pannel to modify the displays resolutions and dispositions

Everything works well
No problem at all for the hardware
Scrolling on firefox or Dolphin is smooth

2) using the free driver (nouveau)

Everything is recognised and works

But I get a flickering screen when scrolling in firefox or dolphin
Sometimes the pop up windows are slowly displayed (staying transparent for a while when trying to install new packages with the CCM for instance)
When having two windows opened it's awful : blinking flickering ... unuseable

II- SOFTWARE (tested with nvidia non-free driver)
1) CCM works well
adding repo for rpmdrake is easy (rmp and glibc are updated before installing new software)

2) Firefox no problem

3) OpenOffice no problem

4) Audio files : m4a, wav, flac, mp3, opus, ogg, musepack evrything can be read
with clementine amarok Elisa

5) video files : mp4, avi, flv, wbm, mkv can be read with vlc (tainted) , mplayer, dragonplay, mpv
There's only a little problem with VLC reading some mpg videos ; I need to change the output from automatic to XVideo (XCB) to view the video

I don't have any other problem With this Live Beta2 iso

It's perfect

Nevertheless a little known problem remains in the repo (the beta iso isn't concerned)
I can't install Guayadeque (complaining of missing libwx_gtk3u_qa-3.1.so3)
indeed there's libwx_gtk3u_qa-3.1.so4 in the repo !!!

And I saw in pkgsubmit.mageia.org/autobuild that Guayadeque doesn't build with the last version of wxgtk 3.1.4 since august...

Well, thank you for this comprehensive & largely favourable view of the M8 Beta2 ISO.

I do not see any hope for raising a bug [yet] for the nouveau problems with 2 displays. It is always a matter of hping for the best, and your success with the nVidia driver is more important.
Re VLC and "some mpg videos", implying that some do work, this is too vague to present [yet] as a bug. Worth trying upstream (forum or bug, with specific video exmples of one that works & one that does not). Good of you to find a solution.

The complaint about guayadeque is legitimate & useful. Confirmed:
$ LANG=C sudo urpmi --test guayadeque
A requested package cannot be installed:
 guayadeque-0.4.6-4.mga8.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied
 libwx_gtk3u_html-3.1.so.3(WXU_3.1)(64bit))
As you say:
 $ urpmf libwx_gtk3u_qa-3.1.so
 lib64wx_gtk3u_qa3.1_4:/usr/lib64/libwx_gtk3u_qa-3.1.so.4
 lib64wx_gtk3u_qa3.1_4:/usr/lib64/libwx_gtk3u_qa-3.1.so.4.0.0
which implies that guayadeque is looking for the wrong version (3); or perhaps it should be >= 3.
That package has different maintainers, so assigning this globally.

Hi Lewis

I think you may close this bug with this title about guayadeque :

Wally rebuilt guayadeque with upstream patches allowing to build it with the new wxgtk and we can install it now in Mageia 8 ...

I think it would be better that I create three different bug reports
1) for the nouveau driver (but that's certainly upstream bug)

2) for VLC (I can't understand why two different .mpg files, with the same video codecs can't be displayed the same way... for the one giving a black screen I have a workaround : I need to change the output from automatic to XVideo (XCB) to view the video (it seems not to accept the hardware acceleration) the problem is that the problematic videos are very huge (300Mbytes)

3) for guayadeque two problem remains
- It is not added in the Plasma menu, and not proposed to use for audio files (even if the mimetypes are present in the desktop file) (something missing in the spec file ?)
- we can't modify the settings (it's maybe an upstream bug)

Closing this at your request.
One bug, one issue, one solution, yes.
