Description David Walser 2020-08-30 19:16:09 CEST
I use emacs-nox, which being a lighter version of the binary, has traditionally started very quickly. In Mageia 7, it takes almost 3 seconds to start, which is a very long time. If someone can help fix this, that would be appreciated. I do not have a user-specific emacs init file, so it is only using the default config provided by our package.

Speaking of which, the syntax for saveplace mode changed in 25.1 but we didn't catch it at the time. I've fixed this in Cauldron and Mageia 7 SVN:

Hi, thanks for reporting this strange behavior.

On my system (M7 Plasma and M8 Plasma, (Intel Core i5 6600k 16 GB DDR4, SSD NVME, Z170 chipset platform),
# urpmi emacs-nox
=> OK

$ emacs
This launches emacs in konsole, like saying "Boooh". Press Enter and "Boooh": it appears. Something wrong with you but you said no particular configuration.

If I don't know you, I would say: "Therefore, application startup time is generally subjective measure biased by habits and sometimes mitigated by factors independent of the software involved, such as a tired hard drive or a large one-off CPU workload (such as compilation, installation of updates, the execution of a heavy program in the background, a heavy server load),..." What a sense of humor! ;)

Mageia 7 was published on 2019-06-30, more than a year ago. So, I think you benchmark this emacs launching and you should have good hardware like a SSD.

Assigning to registered maintainer.

Hardware is irrelevant, it shouldn't be nearly this slow, and never has been before. Also, one of my systems does in fact have an SSD, it makes no difference.

Just guessing. Try running the following script as root.

$ cat /usr/local/sbin/fixfonts.sh
#!/bin/bash

cd /usr/share/fonts
find . -type d -exec mkfontscale '{}' \;
find . -type d -exec mkfontdir '{}' \;
xset fp rehash

Fonts wouldn't be relevant to emacs-nox.

Upgraded one physical machine to Mageia 8; seems to still be an issue.
