I eventually found the source of the problem which was a large accumulation of ever longer lock files in my .config directory. These were of the form: lo_kde5filepickerrc.lock.rmlock lo_kde5filepickerrc.lock.rmlock.rmlock ... etc. I assume they got so long that they exceeded 255 bytes. I deleted them all and LibreOffice now works Sorry to have left you so long. I wanted to try the problem, did not reproduce it, then a long interval before I had a more serious go. Again, no problem with Writer or Calc opening existing files with the file chooser. But thank you for your own investigation, good news. Resolution:
