Description J Scheurich 2020-06-15 14:02:09 CEST
Description of problem:
Wehn installing from the 4GB ISO file, it looks like the installer is not asking for the timezome

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Megeia 7

How reproducible:

It lloks like, there is no timezone selector in the mageia 7 installer.
At least i got location "London" and UTC after installation.
Comment 1 Martin Whitaker 2020-06-15 23:39:29 CEST
You can select the time zone when you reach the Summary screen at the end of the install. See https://doc.mageia.org/installer/7/en/content/misc-params.html. If you don't change it, the installer will pick a time zone based on the primary language you selected at the start.

Sorry, my fault 8-(

> he installer will pick a time zone based on the primary language you selected at the start.

Maybe it is wise, to use the country of the IP adress, a lot of people use "english" as primary language on their computer...
Comment 3 r howard 2020-06-16 07:26:32 CEST
Using the language is useless as is the country as there are a number of countries with multiple time zones.
Similarly IP address can be misleading for location and the system may not be connected to the internet.

It should be a requirement to pick a time zone. Also the user should be asked if the real time clock is set to UTC or is set to a local time zone.

Unless the installer has much changed for Mageia 8, I find this bug puzzling. If it is true, I would have expected the people testing the first M8 ISOs to have raised it already.

(In reply to r howard from comment #3)
> It should be a requirement to pick a time zone.
The very many times I have been through the installers always made choosing the timezone obvious, if not unavoidable.
Note Martin's comment in C1: "If you don't change it..."

However, I have yet to try a Mageia 8 ISO.

> asked if the real time clock is set to UTC or is set to a local time zone.
Once again, this issue is & always has been an unavoidable step fairly early on. The Classic & Live ISOs pre-select the different possibility, no matter.

However, I have yet to try a Mageia 8 ISO.

Can you please say exactly what installer or ISO & medium you tried.

There is no timezone bug. Very early the user is asked about the language.
The timezones the user can choose are many, English US (the default language) has a lot of different US cities and regions. But you are free to choose whatever timezone you want. I just tested it, with the Alpha1 live iso. Afaik it's no different with other isos because the installer is the same, stage2.

This did not change - since I started to use Mageia.

The QA team would have complained if there was such a bug.

Closing as invalid.

While the user isn't forced to select a timezone, the option is there both
during install and post install under mcc/Manage Date and Time.

While the default selection is often incorrect, it's easy to change for users
who are affected, and hasn't changed in Mageia 8.

Just noticed this is for Mageia 7, not the Mageia 8 iso images currently in
qa testing. Nevertheless, the timezone selection has not changed in many years,
so comment 6 applies to the Mageia 7 iso images as well.

Confirmation. To test the [invalid] complaints in comment 0 & comment 3, I have just installed the Mageia 8 alpha 1 x64 Classic ISO, and need to slightly correct myself comment 4.
Both aspects are done in the final summary screen. You select your *timezone*, then it asks whether your system clock is *local time or UTC*.
