Description Bernard SIAUD 2020-01-28 15:16:53 CET
Nvidia-setting was in my auto-start. I don(t know why, but it's not the ideé I think.
Comment 1 Lewis Smith 2020-01-28 15:54:28 CET
This is not very clear.
You say "was". Does this mean that it used to be there, but is no longer ?
Or that it is, now, but did not used to be ?
Or are you simply asking why it is there ? Is it causing a problem?

Do you have nVidia graphics ? If so, what model, please.
What auto-start file ?
Can you list its contents? If it is big, just the part containing the Nvidia-setting.

I found several references to 'nvidia-settings', the most likely being
 /usr/bin/nvidia-settings
used from packages
 bumblebee-nvidia390:/usr/bin/nvidia-settings-bumblebee
 bumblebee-nvidia:/usr/bin/nvidia-settings-bumblebee
 x11-driver-video-nvidia340:/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
 x11-driver-video-nvidia390:/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
 x11-driver-video-nvidia-current:/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
Can you say which you are using?

I have remove Nvidia from "Paramètres" -> "Gestionnaire de Paramètres" -> "session et démarrage" -> "Démarrage automatique d'application" (in french...)
In english may be : xfce4-settings-manager -> session and start -> application autostart (I don't speak good english)
I have never put nvidia-setting here !

My rpm was : x11-driver-video-nvidia-current

nVidia graphics I have :
GK106 [GeForce GTX 660]
Card:NVIDIA GeForce 635 series and later

I have speak about this here in french : https://www.mageialinux-online.org/forum/topic-27202+lancement-automatique-de-nvbidia-setting.php
I have ask why the nvidia-setting come in auto-start. The answer was that it is a bug to report

En effet, je parle Français ; mais c'est mal vu de l'employer ici. Dommage.
Donc je peux lire le forum indiqué ci dessus. Votre traduction était bien.

Thank you for the information given above: it gives the important context.
When you say "I have remove Nvidia from ..." [Xfce-Session and Startup-Application Autostart], do you mean you simply unticked it ?

> Pourquoi "Nvidia setting" s'est faufilé dans le système de démarrage
> automatique ?
It may be quite correct that it was put, activated, in this AutoStart list simply because you have nVidia. It is part of the x11-driver-video-nvidia-current package. No cause for complaint unless it causes a problem...

> En plus, il pose des questions quand on leut l'éteindre,
> je trouve ceci désagréable.
It seems your problem is really here. Can you clarify what it actually is/was ? What questions ; and when are they asked ?
Does your system work equally well when nvidia-settings is disabled at session startup, or enabled?

>"I have remove Nvidia from ..." [Xfce-Session and Startup-Application

Yes

We need the "Nvidia setting" only the first time. After, we don't need it. It's only waste of time.

When we need close de windows, it said : "Do you really want to quit?". Yes If I cloose this useless window, I wan't really want to quit !
Comment 5 Lewis Smith 2020-01-29 21:21:20 CET
Thank you for this further clarification. So the problem is that this question gets asked every time you close a *window* (painible). It *is* of course normal when you close the entire session: logout, shut down etc.
-----------
Assigning to Wally for the Xfce aspect: what is this thing doing, activated, in the Session and Startup-Application Autostart group? Is its presence legitimate? May have given the wrong SRPM.

CC'ing drivers group in case this bug is a consequence of the way x11-driver-video-nvidia-current is installed: should nvidia-settings be run at installation? (maybe it is)

Assigning back to bug squad until this is confirmed being a bug in Xfce.

Session and startup shows apps in Application autostart tab if there is .desktop file in system wide directory /etc/xdg/autostart/ or in per user directory ~/.config/autostart/.

There might be some option in application itself to enable autostart which may create a .desktop file to ~/.config/autostart/.

Thanks for the useful explanation of auto-starts. I did not wish to accuse Xfce! So we need to probe Bernard's configuration. To do next (need to go to Xfce to cross-check).
Comment 8 Lewis Smith 2020-01-30 16:32:11 CET
Back in Xfce.
 $ ls /etc/xdg/autostart/
lists 94 *.desktop files.of which just 4 look Xfce specific.
Settings-Session and Startup-Application Autostart lists 90, all from there.
The first 24 are shown in normal type and ticked (except where I UNticked). All the rest (unticked) are shown in italic.
My ~/.config/autostart/ is empty.

@Bernard
Can you please look in /etc/xdg/autostart/ for a .desktop file that pertains to nVidia, and post its name. To see its essential properties without listing all the languages, try:
 $ head -6 <filename>
 $ tail -6 <filename>
Also list your ~/.config/autostart/ directory.

Perhaps also a small screenshot of the Xfce Startup Applications window which shows the nVidia item and how it is listed. If you do a delayed screenshot, and hover the mouse just below the relevant entry, it shows a command popup also.

This is so we know exactly what we are chasing! Then to find where it comes from.

@Jani
Please excuse that I have for the moment CC'd you, because you are expert here and may have more wise advice. If this peeves you, remove yourself.
I have asked on the French forum for a similar case.

Having nvidia-settings in an autostart directory is a mess.

Therefore, I can't reproduce on Plasma.
And, there a check box in nvidia-settings to prevent him to Ask "Are you sure to quit?" on exit.

I read somewhere I can't today retrieve that there is some Nvidia applet for optimus systems (Intel CG + Nvidia CG on notebook) .

Meanwhile, since we have not received feedback to the information we have requested above, we will assume the problem was not reproducible, or has been fixed in one of the updates we have released.

Users who have experienced this problem are encouraged to upgrade to the latest update of our distribution, and if this issue turns out to still be reproducible in the latest update, please reopen this bug with additional information.
